Little Chance Draft Picks Will Be With Spurs Next Season

Jun 30, 2007 5:35 AM

The Spurs took Tiago Splitter, a 6-foot-11 center-forward from Brazil, with the 28th pick in the first round of Thursday's NBA draft. Five spots later, in the second round, they selected Marcus Williams, a 6-7 forward from Arizona.

Neither figures to be to be on the roster next season.

Splitter is under contract to Tau Cer?mica of the Spanish League for the 2007-08 season and has a hefty buyout clause that effectively prevents the Spurs from even considering bringing him to training camp.

Williams may be in Spurs training camp, but likely will spend the regular season with the Austin Toros, the National Basketball Development League team the Spurs are in the process of buying.

Finley Passes On Free Agency To Stay With Spurs

Jun 27, 2007 1:22 AM

San Antonio Spurs swingman Michael Finley notified the team Tuesday that he will bypass the opportunity to become a free agent July 1 and play out the final season of his contract with the newly crowned champions.

Finley had until Saturday to forfeit next season's $3.1 million salary and return to the open market, but called his decision a "no-brainer."

"I originally signed for three years, with the last year being an option [year] if I didn't enjoy it here," Finley told ESPN.com. "I like it here."

Fabricio Oberto, the starting center for the NBA champion Spurs, has declined a player option on his contract and will become a restricted free agent.

Oberto had until midnight Sunday to decide whether to pick up his option for $2.5 million and he did not make his decision until the final hours.

"I don't know how this changes things at all for us," Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said. "We have every hope that he'll continue to be a part of our team."

Thousands Of Fans Turn Up For Spurs' Title Parade

Jun 18, 2007 2:44 AM

The San Antonio Spurs' black and silver was joined by another color Sunday -- the gold of the team's fourth championship trophy in nine seasons.

Lining the banks of San Antonio's famed River Walk, tens of thousands of fans decked out in the Spurs' colors waited in the oppressive heat to catch a glimpse of their favorite players and congratulate the team.

"You guys continue to come out and support us," said Spurs star Tim Duncan, who has been with the team for all of its title wins. "Hopefully we can get another one."

Spurs point guard Tony Parker was joined by his bride-to-be, actress Eva Longoria.

"I'm so happy -- I feel very blessed and it's a privilege to play with a great team," said Parker, who carried his finals MVP trophy with him on one of the early barges of the river parade. He joked that he'd slept with the trophy for the last couple of nights.

"I put Eva on the couch," he said.

Lindsey Goes To San Antonio Front Office

Jun 17, 2007 8:24 PM

Rockets vice president for basketball operations Dennis Lindsey accepted an offer to replace Sam Presti as the Spurs assistant general manager.

Though Lindsey's title has not been determined, he is expected to serve in a capacity similar to Presti's and his own with the Rockets.

"It took a very special and unique situation for me to move from Houston," Lindsey said. "There's not too many people in the league as attractive to work with as R.C. (Buford, the Spurs general manager) and Pop, (Gregg Popovich, the Spurs coach). I think it will be good for my professional development. I want to learn from them."

San Antonio's four-game sweep of Cleveland finished with a record-low 6.2 television rating and 11 share on ABC, Nielsen Media Research said Friday. The NBA finals averaged 9.3 million viewers this year.

San Antonio's series-winning 83-82 victory on Thursday night got a 6.5/12, down 17 percent from the 7.8/14 for Game 4 last year.

Miami Could Be Interested In Vaughn

Jun 14, 2007 4:19 AM

Spurs' backup guard Jacque Vaughn's availability as free agent this summer could spark interest from the Miami Heat, which likely will be in need of a backup for Jason Williams. Gary Payton, Williams' backup the past two seasons, will be a free agent July 1, but is leaning toward retirement. Williams also is entering the final year of his contract with the Heat.

Vaughn said Wednesday he is happy in San Antonio and would like to return, and Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said the team would try to re-sign Vaughn as Parker's backup. But Vaughn said he would consider offers from other teams that are in position to contend for a title.

''I'm with a special organization, and me and my family love it here,'' Vaughn said. ``I've been in all type of positions as a starter, a second guy and a third guy. Right now, it's only about winning. It's about finding a fit, an organization that will appreciate what I bring to the table, and the chance to win a ring.''
