Elton Brand Expected To Retire Again

Apr 18, 2016 12:04 PM

Elton Brand came out of retirement in January to give the Philadelphia 76ers a veteran presence amid their frustrating season, but he's unlikely to return next season.

“Yeah, I got real sore and real tired and frustrated. I got everything I wanted,” Brand said, chuckling. “I got to know these guys and help the organization any way I could. I had a good time.”

Brand believes the 76ers have a promising future.

“In my opinion, the future looks bright. Really bright.

“We have some really high-level players,” he said. “It’s just youth. It takes a few years, a year or two. Guys have made leaps and bounds. You have high draft picks coming in, a lot of flexibility in the cap. So the future looks bright.”

76ers Could Fire Brett Brown, Elevate Mike D'Antoni

Apr 14, 2016 12:33 PM

If Mike D'Antoni receives an offer to become head coach from another team, the Philadelphia 76ers may be tempted to fire Brett Brown to keep him.

D'Antoni was hired mid-season as an assistant coach.

Bryan Colangelo has become general manager of the 76ers and hired D'Antoni with the Phoenix Suns.

During the season with the 76ers struggling, Brown received an extension.

The Brooklyn Nets and Washington Wizards are two teams who figure to pursue D'Antoni.

NBA Restricting Jerry Colangelo's Access As Part Of USA Basketball

Apr 14, 2016 10:53 AM

The NBA restricted Jerry Colangelo’s reach in an apparent attempt to limit his access and influence over star players.

Rival teams protested about the potential for conflicts and player tampering after Colangelo joined the front office of the Philadelphia 76ers while also serving as managing director of USA Basketball.

Within weeks of Colangelo’s hiring as 76ers chairman of basketball operations in December, the league office informed the NBA Board of Governors of new limitations on Colangelo’s ability to communicate directly to players outside of USA Basketball activities and how much formal impact he can have in the final voting process for national team and Olympic rosters.

Jerry Colangelo relinquished his title of chairman of basketball operations for the 76ers after they hired his son Bryan Colangelo. He will keep a title of special adviser to Philadelphia ownership.

While he still is part of the group that selects the Team USA roster and Olympic player pool, he is no longer allowed to vote for the final national team and Olympic rosters. Colangelo must also make opposing general managers aware of any contact with their players or their players' agents.

Bryan Colangelo Named President Of 76ers

Apr 14, 2016 10:53 AM

Bryan Colangelo has been named president of the Philadelphia 76ers.

Hired in December, Jerry Colangelo is already out as chairman of basketball operations but he'll remain as special adviser to ownership.

Sam Hinkie stepped down as general manager on Wednesday.

Colangelo's teams have appeared in the NBA playoffs 11 times and won four division championships in his 18 seasons as a general manager.

Colangelo will report directly to Josh Harris.

"This is not about a departure from a process," Colangelo said. "This is a moving forward with everything that's already been established."

Hinkie received praise from Colangelo.

"I do think it's been a success," Colangelo said. "We're at a jumping off point now where the organization is poised to take a major leap forward because of what's transpired over this last few years of what I'm going to call, a measured rebuilding process."

Bryan Colangelo Badly Wanted Nets Job, Needed Convincing On 76ers

Apr 14, 2016 10:53 AM

Jerry Colangelo recused himself from the Philadelphia 76ers' search for a general manager to work with Sam Hinkie and would have been fine with Danny Ferry over his son, Bryan Colangelo.

Bryan Colangelo badly wanted to be hired by the Brooklyn Nets and never wanted the 76ers' job. Bryan Colangelo wanted to avoid working in the shadow of his father amid claims of nepotism.

But the 76ers' ownership convinced Bryan Colangelo he was the best candidate available.

Colangelo has had success with both the Phoenix Suns and Toronto Raptors.

Jerry Colangelo Wanted Hinkie Marginalized To Analytics Or Out Of 76ers

Apr 14, 2016 10:53 AM

Jerry Colangelo wanted Sam Hinkie to be marginalized to a role as "glorified director of analytics" or run him out of the Philadelphia 76ers altogether.

Colangelo constantly lamented the absence of what he termed “real basketball people” in the organization.

Hinkie always received support from at least part of the 76ers' ownership group.

"Hinkie was mortified to see his words in the public arena, never expecting that a private correspondence to his superiors would become public and turn into something of a mocked manifesto," writes Wojnarowski.

Hinkie's strong suspicion is Jerry Colangelo leaked the document to the press.

Hinkie often explained himself to ownership in letters and reports.

Brett Brown Not In Danger Of Losing Job As 76ers' Head Coach

Apr 14, 2016 10:53 AM

Brett Brown is in no danger of losing his job as head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers.

Brown's status became unclear following the resignation of Sam Hinkie as general manager, but his position is not at all tied to Hinkie's.

Brown signed an extension with the 76ers through the 18-19 season in December.

The 76ers hired Mike D'Antoni as assistant coach and his ties to Bryan Colangelo made Brown's status seem to be a potential issue.
