Gerry McNamara Gets Magic Offer To Play Summer Ball

Jun 30, 2006 10:22 AM

Gerry McNamara has accepted an offer to play for the Orlando Magic in the Orlando Summer League, the Associated Press is reporting.

McNamara, who finished as Syracuse's fourth all-time leading scorer, wasn't selected in the National Basketball Association draft held Wednesday.

McNamara's agent, Bill Neff, said the player had offers from four or five teams to attend their summer camps and play on their summer league teams.

"They (Orlando) wanted him the most," Neff told The Post-Standard of Syracuse. "They had the most interest. And they presented the best opportunity for him to play in summer league."

Turkoglu Irked By World Championship Snub

Jun 13, 2006 11:08 PM

Hedo Turkoglu of the Orlando Magic is upset that he's been left off the Turkey roster for the world championships.

Turkey coach Bogdan Tanjevic said he cut Turkoglu for the Aug. 19-Sept. 3 tournament in Japan because the Orlando Magic forward asked to join the team late, according to a report published by the Associated Press.

Turkoglu, who reportedly had a back strain on April 19, said he only asked for more time to recover.

"The answer I got really saddened me," he said Tuesday. "I think I didn't deserve this kind of injustice. [Tanjevic] said he didn't need me, told me not to come to the national team."

Redick Cancels Private Workout With Magic

Jun 13, 2006 9:14 AM

Duke pair J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams have both cancelled private workouts with the Orlando Magic, according to a report published in Florida Today.

Redick was scheduled to work out for the team on Wednesday, with agent Arn Tellem informing the Magic that the guard was suffering from a sore back.

Just Saturday, when Redick was at Disney World for his NBA-mandated physical and skills testing, he said "I've definitely circled that (Magic workout) on my calendar and I've looked forward to working out for them for a few weeks now."

What might concern the Magic now is that Redick could have already secured a guarantee that he will be selected in the top 10 of the June 28 NBA Draft.

Bobcats Pick Up 2nd Round Pick

Jun 9, 2006 7:31 PM

Orlando decided on Friday that it would not use a second round pick, the 50th overall, so the pick will go the Charlotte Bobcats.

Charlotte was owed a second-round pick from Sacramento as compensation for the trade last year which sent guard Jason Hart to the Kings.

By passing on it this year, Orlando will get Sacramento's second-round pick in 2007.

Orlando Trying To Trade Up To Top-8

Jun 9, 2006 8:39 AM

The Orlando Magic are looking to trade up in this year's draft with either the Timberwolves, Celtics or Rockets, positions 6, 7 or 8.

"I'm comfortable at 11, but we're trying to get up a couple picks ahead of us,'' said Magic General Manager Otis Smith. "It's a realistic goal. There are teams trying to move down, so I wouldn't be surprised if we get in there.

"We've heard nothing yet that would knock us over. All the talks have been so preliminary at this point,'' Smith said. "Things are just being thrown against the wall. Everyone has to get comfortable with the draft and who they can get at their spots. A week or so from now, talks will get more serious.''

Vazquez Makes NBA Cautious

Jun 7, 2006 9:51 AM

Fran Vazquez has made teams more aware of the risks involved in selecting Europeans, leading to more research being done on players to avoid the situation that the Orlando Magic found themselves to be in last season.

The Magic used the No. 11 pick of the 2005 draft to select Vazquez, who then used that leverage to sign a more lucrative contract with Akasvayu Girona in Spain.

"It's definitely a caution flag, a caution sign that you better pay attention to,'' said Toronto Raptors President and General Manager Bryan Colangelo.

"What we became was an example for the entire league that something like this could happen,'' Magic General Manager Otis Smith said. "I don't think anyone will be gun-shy [of drafting a European], but it heightened everyone's awareness to the Nth degree.''
