Mavs Re-Sign Devean George

Aug 25, 2008 3:52 PM

The Dallas Mavericks announced today that they have re-signed forward Devean George. Per team policy, terms of the deal were undisclosed.

George, a nine-year veteran, played his first seven seasons for the Los Angeles Lakers before the Mavericks originally signed him on August 2, 2006.  In 53 games last season with four starts, George averaged 3.7 points and 2.6 rebounds in 15.5 minutes per game.

"Getting Devean back in a Mavs' uniform has been a goal of ours all summer,? said Head Coach Rick Carlisle.  ?His experience and ability to run the floor and play and defend multiple positions will be a great asset for us this season.?

RealGM Note: George was ranked 302nd in season FIC and 'deserved' to make just $1.38 million.  He had a per 40 FIC of just 6.5, which is well below the league median of 10.0.

ESPN's Marc Stein reported last week that the deal would be worth $4 million over two years.

Kidd Turns Attention To Mavericks

Aug 25, 2008 8:33 AM

Jason Kidd extended his record as a member of Team USA to 56-0 in Olympics, Olympic qualifying and exhibition games.

"I'm undefeated," said Kidd. "I told them I can retire now from international ball, but LeBron [James] threw out something I didn't like. He said he won't play in 2012 unless I'm there."

"J-Kidd is going to become a player-coach now," said James.

But Kidd has already turned his attention to the Mavericks.

"Coach Carlisle's already texted me, telling me training camp starts in a month," Kidd said, adding that he talked to Dirk Nowitzki about the same subject. "I'm excited. I can't wait."

"I was telling Casey [Smith, the Mavs trainer who was with Team USA in Beijing], 'We were only five games out of being in the No. 1 (seed)," Kidd said of last season, when the Mavericks got bounced from the first round of the playoffs.

"Now I'll become selfish and shoot all of those shots that I didn't shoot here," he said. "Carlisle and I talked about it before I left. I've been working on shooting a lot of shots. We'll see what happens."

Kidd Giving Gold Medal To Wynn's Wife

Aug 24, 2008 12:56 PM

Elaine Wynn, who is married to casino owner Steve Wynn, was promised by Jason Kidd that he would give her his newest Olympic medal if the Americans won the gold.

"It's not a (gambling) marker or anything like that," Kidd told The Arizona Republic. "She's just a great friend and a really great person."

They met last year when Kidd and the USA team stayed at the Wynn while training in Las Vegas.

"Last summer, we stayed at the Wynn for (what seemed like) a lifetime, close to three weeks," Kidd said. "We met at a banquet, we got to talking, and she really understands the game."

"I told her I'd make a deal with her, that if we won the gold medal, I'd give it to her. She thought I was kidding. But I told her I had one already, and the way they treated us at the Wynn, it was the least I could do."

Mavs Still Have Confidence In Howard

Aug 21, 2008 9:26 AM

The Mavericks still have confidence in forward Josh Howard despite some edgy offseason comments, according to The Star-Telegram.

"I know a lot of 20-somethings who have made mistakes, myself included," Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said. "The smart ones learn from the mistakes. Josh is smart. He has learned from all of this, and will continue to learn from it, and use it for motivation on and off the court."

Howard admitted earlier this summer that he smokes marijuana during the offseason.

"While others might have run away from responsibility when they get hit with negative media," Cuban wrote, "Josh not only followed through with all of his camps, he expanded the camps, increasing the number of scholarships [in his foundation]. In addition to the camps he has in Dallas and in Winston-Salem, in addition to his annual bowling tournament, this summer he added a charity softball game."

Mavs Don't Want To Extend Kidd Either?

Aug 20, 2008 4:21 PM

The lack of a contract extension was a big reason why Jason Kidd wanted to leave New Jersey, but rumor has it that there is no talk of him getting one in Dallas either, according to The Star-Ledger.

"It's just business," Kidd said of New Jersey. "We had a great run. Sometimes, with moves, business gets in the way. The sad thing is, nobody there is left from when we started the whole thing. I guess you could say they're starting over."

Mavericks, George Agree On Two-Year Deal

Aug 20, 2008 4:08 PM

The Dallas Mavericks have signed forward Devean George to a two-year contract worth roughly $4 million, according to ESPN.com's Marc Stein.

Agent Mark Bartelstein told ESPN on Wednesday that the deal includes a player option for George to return to free agency after the 2008-09 season.

The agreement comes as a surprise to some after George's controversial refusal in February to be included in the Mavericks' trade with the New Jersey Nets for Jason Kidd.

Schrempf A Big Fan Of Nowitzki

Aug 10, 2008 4:58 PM

Detlef Schrempf, the first major German star in the NBA, happens to be one of Dirk Nowitzki's biggest fans, according to The Star-Telegram.

"Dirk has done amazing things for German basketball," Schrempf said recently. "To play every summer is extremely hard and tough on the body. I did it for a few years. You?re away all summer, traveling, and it?s tough. This is the last chance for Germany for a while because they?re losing a lot of players and there are not a lot coming up. So it would be nice if they could medal."

Schrempf was a member of the German national team that finished seventh at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.
