Webber Pondering Greek Team's Multi-Million Offer

Sep 28, 2007 4:42 PM

Chris Webber has a multi-million dollar contract offer on the table from Olympiacos of Greece, ESPN's Chris Sheridan is reporting, and he plans to decide by this weekend whether to accept it or wait on the sidelines for another chance at playing in the NBA.

Two sources familiar with the offer told ESPN.com that Olympiacos was offering a two-year deal that would net Webber between $10 million and $12 million, which would make him the highest-paid American player in Europe.

Webber has said he is leaning toward returning to the Detroit Pistons, although signing Webber prior to training camp, even for the veterans' minimum, would have cap ramifications that the Pistons want to avoid. Webber is said to be comfortable with the idea of waiting at least a month or two for the Pistons' roster issues to work themselves out, which would allow him to join them in midseason as he did in 2005-06.

Webber also spoke over the summer with the Dallas Mavericks, who believed he would be a good fit for their system. But the Mavs failed to hear anything resembling a commitment from Webber (or from P.J. Brown), and they've let Webber drop off their radar -- at least for the time being.

Tarpley, who was permanently banned from the NBA in 1995, claimed in his lawsuit the NBA and the Mavericks discriminated against him on the basis of his disability as a recovering drug and alcohol abuser.

"Tarpley is a qualified individual with a disability within the meaning of the ADA, in that he has a disability in the form of past drug and alcohol abuse, which substantially limits at least one of his major life activities," according to the 46-page lawsuit, which was filed in Houston federal court.

Sep 16, 2007 10:56 AM

When asked by Eddie Sefko of the Dallas Morning News whether or not he thought Chris Webber or P.J. Brown would end up in a Mavericks uniform, Dallas head coach Avery Johnson had this to say:

"Ooh, I hope so. But we'll have to wait and see. Either of those guys would be a tremendous asset in terms of a role-playing guy for a team. But they have some other opportunities that they're looking at. So we'll have to wait and see."

Welcome To The World Of Mark Cuban

Sep 15, 2007 12:29 AM

Everyone dreams about what they'd do with a billion dollars. For a 40-something sports fan, the vision could easily go something like this:

Buy your favorite team, even if it's an loser that's not for sale. Do wacky stunts that bring attention to your club and to you, but also hire the right people to build the team into a winner.

Try buying a team in another sport that you grew up rooting for. Better yet, bid on two.

When one of baseball's landmark franchises goes for sale, make an offer.

When folks are looking to start a football league to rival the NFL, grab a piece of the action.

Along the way, you'll discover new diversions, such as mixed martial arts. Go ahead and add that to your empire -- which, by now, is part of a bigger portfolio that includes a cutting-edge television network, a respected movie company and a national chain of theaters.

With so much going on, you'll become more famous than your players. GQ will make you a "Man of the Year" even though your wardrobe is mostly jeans and T-shirts. ABC will put you on "Dancing With The Stars" even though you bombed the first time the network put you in prime time.

Yes, the world of Mark Cuban.

Mavs Extend Devin Harris

Sep 12, 2007 8:52 PM

The Dallas Mavericks and point guard Devin Harris agreed to a five-year contract extension today. Harris, the fifth pick of the 2004 NBA Draft, has spent his entire three-year career with the Mavericks after being acquired from Washington in draft-day trade.

?I feel good about the commitment for another five years,? Harris said after a morning workout American Airlines Center practice court. ?Hopefully now we can run with it.?

Harris averaged career highs last season in points (10.2), assists (3.7), rebounds (2.5), steals (1.2) and minutes (26.0). He also played in 80 games, with 61 starts, shot 49.2 percent from the field and 82.4 percent from the line ? all career bests.

The five-year extension, which begins after this season, locks Harris up through 2012-13. Harris has played in a key role in the Mavericks reaching the 2006 NBA Finals and finishing with the NBA?s best record last season.

?Devin is a vital part of our core and has played a key role in our success,? Mavericks president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said. ?We are excited about his future in a Mavericks uniform.?
