Chris Bosh Reportedly Gave Bulls Verbal Agreement In 2010

Jun 29, 2020 2:09 PM

The Chicago Bulls pursued Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade and LeBron James during the 2010 offseason and at point were sure they would at the very least sign Bosh.

"To me the story and conversation starts with Chris Bosh," said Nick Friedell on the Brian Windhorst podcast. "Because you talk to people in that Bulls' organization, including former players... Chris Bosh said he was coming to the Bulls, straight up.

"Chris Bosh and the Bulls were supposed to be together, at least in Chicago's mind. And then as that week played out, as I know you get into in the story, they went 'What's happening here?'

"As far as the Bulls were concerned, they felt like they had a commitment, at least some people in the organization did, from Chris Bosh. They felt like Dwyane Wade would follow. That they hoped that would work out, especially as the days continued into that first weekend.

"Then to see everything kind of fall apart in that fashion and see all three of the big guns go to Miami the way they did, frankly, I still don't think the Bulls are all the way over it."

Later in the podcast, Friedell indicates that Bosh gave the Bulls a verbal commitment during his meeting.

"Chris Bosh, according to more than one person in the organization, said 'I'm coming to play for the Bulls.' Straight up. He said, 'I'm coming to play for the Bulls. This is where I'm gonna be.'"

Bulls Were Skeptical Of Dwyane Wade's Interest During 2010 Free Agency

Jun 29, 2020 1:54 PM

When the Chicago Bulls pursued Dwyane Wade in free agency in 2010, they were skeptical he had genuine interest in signing with the franchise.

Sources tell ESPN the Bulls were worried Wade would pass along their free agent strategy to the Miami Heat. Due to that skepticism, the Bulls only revealed part of their pitch to Wade.

Wade grew up in Chicago and beamed when he tried on a red Bulls No. 3 jersey with his name across the back.

Wade eventually asked his agent, Henry Thomas, to arrange a second meeting with the Bulls. During that meeting, the Bulls gave Wade their full pitch.

Wade asked the Bulls if they could create enough cap space for a third star.

While the Bulls feared Wade would take their pitch to the Heat, Wade essentially took Miam's strategy and brought it to Chicago.

The Bulls needed an extra $16 million to $18 million in cap space to sign all three with trading away Luol Deng their best path to doing so.

Eight Non-Bubble Teams Interested In Playing Games At Secondary Site

Jun 27, 2020 1:25 PM

The NBA and NBPA are holding discussions about a possible second site for the eight teams not participating in the Orlando restart. The Charlotte Hornets, Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors face a scenario where they will go nearly six months without playing a competitive game.

Sources tell Sam Amick of The Athletic that there is significant support from most of those eight teams about the concept.

Those eight teams could even play televised games.

The Cavaliers, Pistons and Hawks have been the most vocal among the group in support of the idea. The Knicks have expressed reservations, at least in part because they have a roster with several pending free agents.

One of those teams could serve as host, or they could also play in a city such as Las Vegas or Houston.

NBA Coaches Association Reportedly Has 'Disdain' For Bulls

Jun 12, 2020 12:53 PM

The Chicago Bulls organization have a "perception problem" among NBA coaches, according to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times.

"There is a perception problem, and when you come from the outside – like Arturas did and Marc Eversley have – you know what that perception problem is. Carlisle, the Dallas coach, has made it very clear the disdain the coaches association and a lot of coaches have for the Bulls and the practices they have toward coaches.

"The way they’ve treated them as commodities for more than three, four decades, the way they’ve fired guys on Christmas Eve," said Cowley.

With the team moving on from Jim Boylen, Ime Udoka has reportedly emerged as the top candidate for the head coaching position.

Raptors assistant Adrian Griffin is also rumored to be a candidate.

Arturas Karnisovas: Bulls Looking For 'Creative Ways' To Develop Players Without Games

Jun 7, 2020 1:02 PM

Arturas Karnisovas said that the Chicago Bulls were looking for "creative ways" to continue to develop their players after not receiving an invite to resume the season in Orlando.

“I do agree with you that not playing puts us in a competitive disadvantage. But I think there are creative ways to (stay sharp)," said Karnisovas.

Teams who left out of the regular-season's resumption have proposed putting on their own mini summer leagues, training camps, and scrimmages to develop their players.

Karnisovas said he and new general manager Marc Eversley will run through their options once they return to Chicago.

“We’re getting now on calls and we’re having conversations about how we can develop our players and how we can have a structure in place to get some practicing and possibly some scrimmaging possibly in the offseason to catch up to those teams that are going to be playing. The work obviously never stops. I informed the players that we will inform them depending on what the league is going to allow us to do this summer, and we’re going to go from there.”

Zach LaVine Says 'We've Got To Do A Lot Of Things Differently' After Not Receiving Orlando Invite

Jun 6, 2020 12:00 PM

Zach LaVine spoke of his disappointment after the Chicago Bulls were not one of the 22 teams invited to resume the regular season in Orlando.

The Bulls, who had a 22-43 record, were 11th in the Eastern Conference.

"It sucks. You've got to understand it. It's a weird time, especially with everything that's going on right now, but it's upsetting too. We weren't even good enough to get to the play-in game, so it's upsetting and it just shows that we've got to do a lot of things differently to get ourselves that recognition to get to that spot," said LaVine.

The team hired a new vice president of basketball operations in Arturas Karnisovas, along with a new general manager in Marc Eversley. But LaVine added that the change in culture begins with the players.

"We can't continue to make the same mistakes. We have to change our identity and how we're looked at as a team to [having] a winning culture. We had high expectations for this year ... and it wasn't anything like that. I think we competed extremely well. I think we were one of the hardest-playing teams in the NBA, but you need that 'W' in your win column, so we've got to get better."

Teams Left Out Of Regular-Season Resumption Propose Regional Mini Summer Leagues, Training Camps

Jun 6, 2020 1:28 AM

A majority of the NBA teams left out of the league's restart of the regular season have proposed putting on their own mini summer leagues and training camps to continue to develop their young players.

The teams, which include Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Minnesota, and New York, could possibly go nine months in between games. There is concern that young, developing players will struggle as they are separated from their teams for an extended period of time.

Several teams have proposed training camps and organized team activities in lieu of regular season games.

The Pistons and Cavs are discussing the possibility of having joint practices, as well as a mini-pod of games.

The teams have presented several ideas to the league, including: mandatory and voluntary workouts in July, regional minicamps in August that include joint practices and three televised games, and for their 2020-21 training camps to start 7-10 days earlier than teams competing in Orlando.

The league said it would work with the teams in question to help reach a solution.
