Source: Chris Paul Upset With Clippers' Organization

May 31, 2013 12:57 AM

Chris Paul is angry with the Los Angeles Clippers' organization due to how he has been widely blamed for the dismissal of Vinny Del Negro, according to a source.

Paul will be a free agent and it is unclear if it will impact his decision, but the source said it could lead him to explore options elsewhere.

"He's angry right now and his anger is directed toward the Clippers organization," the source said. "Chris is a man of principle and if he feels like you've gone against his principles, it will affect how he feels about you. He's very agitated that his name has been put out there as the reason for Vinny's firing. He had nothing to do with it."

The Clippers can offer Paul a five-year, $108 million contract and it has been widely assumed that he would choose to re-sign.

The source said that Paul might be willing to accept a deal for less money due to the situation.

Donald Sterling implied in an interview with the Los Angeles Times that Paul and Blake Griffin were to blame for the decision to fire Del Negro.

Paul had refused to be involved in the Clippers' decision upon Del Negro.

"Chris made it abundantly clear to the Clippers that he did not want to be involved in any decision about Vinny's future," the source said. "And Blake had nothing to do with it either."

The Atlanta Hawks could be a contender to sign Paul if he considers leaving the Clippers. The Hawks could sign both Paul and Dwight Howard this offseason, though the latter has appeared resistant to the idea of playing in his hometown.

Budenholzer Plans To Implement 'Ball Movement' Centric Offense With Hawks

May 30, 2013 1:12 PM

Mike Budenholzer plans to emphasize ball movement as head coach of the Atlanta Hawks.

A longtime assistant to Gregg Popovich, Budenholzer believes the Spurs’ offensive system is catching on with other teams.

“I think the league and the NBA, whether it’s fundamentals or the style of playing, is moving toward the style that we’re playing,” Budenholzer said. “I look forward to bringing to Atlanta the ball movement and people movement and people sharing and participating and a little bit less of the one on one.

“It’s something you have to believe in and you have to sell. I think in the initial stages it may be a little difficult, but in the long run players, coaches, fans and everyone will enjoy it and see the benefits.”

Budenholzer intends to build around Al Horford and the financial flexibility Danny Ferry created before the 2012-13 season.

The Hawks could have as much as $40 million in cap space this summer.

“We want to build it and so as a coach that is exciting,” Budenholzer said. “That is why to me, that roster element in making the decision was strong.”

Hawks Hire Mike Budenholzer As Head Coach

May 28, 2013 4:34 PM

The Atlanta Hawks have named Mike Budenholzer the team’s new head coach, President of Basketball Operations/General Manager Danny Ferry announced. Budenholzer becomes the 12th full-time head coach in Hawks history.

“We are thrilled to have Mike as the next coach of the Atlanta Hawks. He has an incredible basketball acumen and has a keen awareness of the league and what it takes to be successful," Ferry said. "His experience and four championships over the last 17 years provide a tremendous foundation for his leadership of our team.”

Budenholzer, 43, spent the past 19 seasons with the San Antonio Spurs, including the final 17 seasons as an assistant coach.

“I have been extremely fortunate to be a part of the San Antonio Spurs organization for the last 19 years. I knew it would have to be a tremendous situation for me to leave and clearly coming to Atlanta as the head coach of the Hawks is perfect for me,” said Budenholzer. “Ownership’s commitment to taking this organization to the next level and creating a unique and special culture, partnering with a general manager like Danny Ferry who I have great respect for, and building a roster that has terrific potential because of the existing core and the ensuing flexibility presents a rare and uniquely positive opportunity.”

Budenholzer had long been considered the eventual successor to Gregg Popovich with the Spurs.

Source: Howard Also Considering Warriors

May 23, 2013 10:59 AM

Dwight Howard is considering signing with the Golden State Warriors as well as the previously reported Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks, a source close to the player said Thursday.

According to the source, Howard's main concern involves "what team he feels has the best chance to win championships, has the best team and system around him."

Howard can't officially sign with a team until July 10, when a moratorium on NBA business is lifted.

Stan Van Gundy Confirms He Won't Coach Next Season

May 21, 2013 10:46 AM

Stan Van Gundy appeared on The David Baumann Radio Show on Tuesday morning in Orlando and confirmed he will not coach next season.

“As you get down the road more and the longer you are out, the harder it is to get back in and that was certainly a difficult part of the decision process for me because it’s certainly something that I miss and don’t want to close the door on for the rest of my life, but, it is not right now anyway, in the best interest of my family, so it won’t be next year,” said Van Gundy.

Van Gundy has not interviewed with any teams, though he has been contacted.

The Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks are two teams known to have interest in Van Gundy.

“I sort of laugh a little bit on jobs I supposedly interviewed for. I don’t know who those sources are. I certainly have had inquiries from people, but no job offers and I have not interviewed anywhere.”

Van Gundy was also asked about an ESPN report indicating Dwight Howard's frustration with Mike D'Antoni.

“When Dwight has a private meeting with Mitch Kupchak, I don’t know who the source would be… other than Mitch Kupchak," said Van Gundy. "My guess is Mitch is not the source and Dwight is not the source.

“I know through my own history and even some things written about what I was supposedly doing this Spring, that quite honestly, I think a lot of times these writers just sit down, make up a story, claim there’s a source and put it out there. I hate to say that, but there’s no other explanation.”

Howard is also intrigued by the possibility of playing with James Harden.

Howard will engage in the free agency process and is expected to hear pitches from the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Atlanta Hawks and the Rockets.

Larry Drew Will Interview For Bucks' Head Coaching Job Monday

May 17, 2013 5:26 PM

Larry Drew will interview for the Milwaukee Bucks' head coaching vacancy on Monday and is receiving interest from a second team.

The Bucks called Danny Ferry about speaking with Drew, who is still under contract with the Atlanta Hawks until June 30, and they were granted permission.

“I’ve moved on from the situation,” Drew said. “We had a very professional talk just trying to get things in order since I’m still under contract.”

While Drew is prepared to part ways with the Hawks, the door is not completely closed on him returning as coach.

“There is not a sadness,” Drew said. “This is a business. We left open that this could evolve back. If it doesn’t, I have to move on. That’s how this business works. I knew that. Nine years is a good run. There is a business side to this profession."
