Quincy Douby Reaches Deal With Shanghai Sharks Of China

Nov 24, 2013 4:53 PM

NBA D-League guard Quincy Douby has reached agreement on a one-year deal with the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association, a source told RealGM.

Douby had been the No. 3 pick in the Development League’s draft, and he further cemented himself as a strong call-up candidate with a 20-points-per-game start to the Sioux Falls’ season.

With Shanghai, Douby significantly bolsters a scoring backcourt that lost Von Wafer for the year, teaming with Indiana Pacers camp invite Darnell Jackson at point guard. Shanghai is expected to go deep in the Chinese playoffs, a scenario that could prevent Douby from signing in the NBA late in its season.

After three seasons as a standout at Rutgers, Douby went 19th in the NBA Draft in 2006 to the Sacramento Kings and played two seasons with the organization. He signed a free agent deal with the Toronto Raptors in 2009, but was later released.

Douby, 29, has averages of 4.1 points and one rebound while shooting 31.2 percent from three-point range over three NBA seasons. The 6-foot-3 sharpshooter closed the 2012-13 season with Zhejiang.

Chris Johnson Signs Deal With Zhejiang Lions Of China

Nov 23, 2013 3:21 PM

Free agent center Chris Johnson has signed a one-year contract with Zhejiang Guangsha Lions of the Chinese Basketball Association, a source told RealGM.

A final release of the Minnesota Timberwolves in training camp, Johnson had been scouring offers overseas, ultimately reaching terms late Saturday morning. The shortened season in China gives Johnson an opportunity to return to the NBA in February or March, when teams seek to fortify their depth.

Johnson averaged 3.9 points and two rebounds in 30 games with the Timberwolves a season ago, and the 6-foot-11 big man proved himself under two 10-day contracts before earning a guaranteed deal.

Johnson, 28, went unselected in the 2009 NBA draft, playing three NBA seasons with Portland, Boston, New Orleans and Minnesota. He’s also spent part of his professional career overseas (Turkey, Poland) and in the D-League (Dakota, Santa Cruz).

David Pick of Eurobasket.com first reported that Johnson was signing with Zhejiang.

Josh Akognon Signing With Qingdao Of China

Nov 15, 2013 8:41 PM

Free agent guard Josh Akognon has reached agreement on a substantial one-year contract with Qingdao Eagles of the Chinese Basketball Association, sources told RealGM.

Akognon will make significantly more money with Qingdao than if he had signed with one of the several NBA teams that showed recent interest.

With Qingdao, Akognon’s season will be complete and have him available to NBA teams by early February. Three NBA teams had been interested in him and would be more inclined to sign him near the trade deadline, a source said.

For Akognon, the lucrative deal and the shortened season keep him in position to play in the NBA this season.

Akognon played three games with the Dallas Mavericks last season, and he led the organization’s summer league team in July for the second straight year, averaging nearly 18 points on 39.1 percent three-point shooting. The Memphis Grizzlies unexpectedly released him on Oct. 6.

Regarded as a knockdown shooter and strong ball handler, Akognon went undrafted in the 2008 NBA draft, carving an impressive professional career overseas. He played parts of the last two seasons with Dongguan and Liaoning in China.

Sam Young Signs Deal With Australia's Sydney Kings

Nov 14, 2013 3:01 AM

Free agent Sam Young has signed a contract with the Sydney Kings of the National Basketball League in a deal that contains an NBA escape clause, agent Joel Bell told RealGM.

“Sam had other options, but this one made the most sense and will pay him as the highest player in the league,” Bell said.

Young can opt out of his deal up until the start of Sydney’s playoffs to join an NBA team, a significant provision that swayed the 28-year-old’s decision.

Young had a reserve role for the Indiana Pacers a season ago, averaging 2.8 points and 2.2 rebounds and serving as a defensive stopper against explosive wing players. He signed with the San Antonio Spurs before training camp, but was waived early in preseason.

With Sydney, Young will play under successful Australian coach Shane Heal. A former NBA player with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Spurs, Heal is also a shooting coach expected to aid in improving Young’s outside jumper.

Young, a 6-foot-6 swingman, has also played with the Memphis Grizzlies and Philadelphia 76ers over his four NBA seasons.

Luther Head Looking To Sign Overseas, Return To NBA

Nov 11, 2013 2:07 PM

Luther Head is fielding interest to play overseas in the hopes of resurrecting an NBA career, a source told RealGM.

Head is receiving interest from teams in Turkey and Ukraine – including Turkish team Turk Telekom and Melbourne Tigers of the National Basketball League, a source said. NBA teams that have expressed a level of interest in Head have made clear a swift move for him won’t be made.

A former first round draft choice of the Houston Rockets in 2005, Head played with four teams in six NBA seasons. He spent his most recent season with the Sacramento Kings in 2011, and Head enjoyed his best year in 2006-07, when he averaged nearly 11 points on 44.1 percent three-point shooting on the Rockets’ playoff team.

Head entered the 2005 NBA draft after a standout career at the Univeristy of Illinois, where the 6-foot-3 sharpshooter teamed with Deron Williams and Dee Brown to form a dynamic backcourt that led the school to the NCAA championship game.

Head, 30, played in the D-League a season ago, averaging 12.5 points and 1.5 steals per game with Austin and Texas.

Gani Lawal Signs One-Year Deal With Olimpia Milano Of Euroleague

Nov 2, 2013 7:54 PM

Gani Lawal has signed a one-year contract with Italian club Olimpia Milano of the European League, agent Errol Bennett of Three Eye Sports told RealGM.

Lawal’s representatives had been finalizing his agreement in recent days, and the two sides signed Saturday afternoon. Lawal also received strong interest from a Turkish team. With Olimpia Milano, he joins former Cleveland Cavaliers forward Samardo Samuels.

Lawal inked a multi-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers early last month, but he played six preseason games, would be given only a limited role in the regular season, and was ultimately released on Oct. 26.

“Gani is very excited about this opportunity with Milano,” Bennett said. “There is going to be a heavy NBA presence, with scouts, and he could go back there after another solid season. He’ll just continue to build his brand, his game.”

An active, rugged forward, Lawal, 24, had his best professional season last year as a member of Virtus Roma of Eurocup, averaging 13.3 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks.

Lawal, a second round pick of Phoenix in 2010, played one game with the Suns three seasons ago.
