Self Expresses Concern About Jayhawks' Point Guard Play

Aug 29, 2012 8:46 PM

Kansas’ season may hinge on the point guard trio of senior Elijah Johnson, sophomore Naadir Tharpe and freshman Anrio Adams.

“Right now if I was nervous about a position, it would be our point-guard play, just because it’s not as natural for Elijah, Naadir’s unproven and Anrio’s never done it,” Self said.

Johnson is the incumbent at the position after starting six games last season.

“We’ve got some talented kids back there, but getting the pieces to fit, it’s a lot easier making the pieces fit if you’re playing with two point guards than it is when you’re playing maybe with half a point guard,” Self said. “To put our best team out there right now, you’re looking at a team that’s not a great ballhandling and passing team. There’s going to be some pressure on Elijah to play well this year.”

Howland Plans For UCLA To Use Two Lead Guard Lineup

Aug 20, 2012 9:47 PM

Ben Howland has been playing Larry Drew and Kyle Anderson in the same lineups.

“It’s really fun to watch,” Howland said. “They’re two guys that can pass, that like to pass, and can really see the floor. Offensively, those two guys together are going to do well when they’re in.”

Drew transferred from North Carolina midway through his junior year.

“Larry’s got something to prove,” Howland said. “He’s got a lot of doubters out there after the way things went.”

Worldwide Wes' Influence On College Recruiting Considered Overblown By 37 Percent Of Coaches

Aug 9, 2012 11:14 AM

William Wesley, popularly known as World Wide Wes, has become a bigger factor in recent years on the college basketball level.

Wesley is an agent for coaches within Creative Artists Agency, the same agency as Leon Rose.

Nearly 100 college coaches were asked if Wesley is a factor in college recruiting or if his influence is overblown. Sixty-three percent of respondents said he is a factor, while 37 percent characterize it as overblown.

“He's an agent who cheats. He's a bag man,” said one coach.

“We have all become so sensitive to just him. There are more just like him, he just gets all of the attention,” said another coach.

“Wes' presence is drastically overblown," said a coach. "His power is only perceived at best, and only because naïve/desperate coaches empower him. If he had any power, he would certainly be using it to the benefit of John Calipari and Kenny Payne, who he has known for 25 years. The fact that coaches are hiring him as an agent is laughable, and the fact that the NCAA does not treat him as an agent due to his close affiliation with Leon Rose is an absolute injustice!”
