Larry Greer, a former assistant coach with the Portland Trail Blazers, has accepted an offer to join Herb Sendek’s staff at Arizona State.
Greer spent four seasons as the Blazers' advanced scout before Nate McMillan promoted him to assistant last offseason.
Eric Musselman is expected to join Sendek’s staff early next week, according to a report.
Musselman last season coached the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA's developmental league.
The San Antonio Spurs will bring in Brian Butch and Warren Carter next week for a workout.
Carter played for Dexia Mons-Hainaut last season.
Butch has spent the past few seasons in the D-League.
Sasha Vujacic and Maria Sharapova are no longer engaged.
"It's been since the end of spring," Sharapova said. "I was waiting for someone to actually ask me that question.
"I have never really been the person to announce things. I never announced when we were together or never announced we were engaged. I never have in any of my previous relationships as well."
Vujacic signed a one-year deal with Anadolu Efes of Turkey in 2011.
"It was a really nice period of time for both of us, but our career schedules just made it extremely difficult to see each other with the traveling and especially his career move to Turkey. But we have a tremendous amount of respect for each other. I still would love to call him as a friend. We spent really great years together."
The Bobcats are taking a look at free agent forward Josh Howard, president of basketball operations Rod Higgins confirmed.
Howard has also received interest from the Knicks and Bulls.
Deshaun Thomas changed his mind five times over entering the NBA draft last spring before deciding to return for his junior season at Ohio State.
Thomas was a projected as a borderline first round pick.
“I just sat back one day and realized, ‘I’m going to stay and get better, and I think I can (go) higher (next) year,” he said. “I think I made a great decision.”
Thomas participated in two camps this summer that were scouted by NBA talent evaluators.
“They said my body was great, and they liked that I could score in different ways,” said Thomas, who said he is down to 214 pounds with 7.1 percent body fat. That’s at least 10 pounds lighter than his first two seasons. “I can move better,” he said.
Jacque Vaughn has completed his staff, with the addition of three assistants, two player development coaches and a special consultant.
James Borrego, Wes Unseld, Jr. and Brett Gunning will serve as Vaughn's main assistants. Luke Stuckey and Laron Profit will handle player development, while Gordon Chiesa was hired as a special consultant.
"Each coach brings a unique skill set to the staff," Vaughn said. "Collectively, this staff possesses a diverse basketball background. We are truly fortunate that these men have decided to join our Magic family."
Kemba Walker is ready to emerge as a leader on the court and in the locker room.
“Coach (Mike Dunlap) is really pushing me to be the leader and pushing me to use my voice,” said Walker, who turned 22 in May. “I’m trying to embrace that role.”
Walker praised Charlotte’s decision to select Michael Kidd-Gilchrist with the second overall pick of the June draft.
“Very happy, very happy,” Walker said. “He was the next best player in the draft (behind Kentucky teammate Anthony Davis) and we had to take him. Not only that. He’s a great person. He’s a great kid. He’s going to be a great teammate. That’s what we need. We need high character guys.”
The Nets are looking to build a new practice facility and are considering a waterfront site in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, a real estate source said.
Real-estate developer Joseph Sitt has owned the 660,000-square-foot parcel since 2005, when he purchased it for about $24 million.
Gregg Popovich envisions Kawhi Leonard as the future cornerstone of the Spurs.
“I think he’s going to be a star. And as time goes on, he’ll be the face of the Spurs I think. At both ends of the court, he is really a special player,” said Popovich, who has been San Antonio's coach since 1996. “And what makes me be so confident about him is that he wants it so badly. He wants to be a good player, I mean a great player. He comes early, he stays late, and he’s coachable, he’s just like a sponge. When you consider he’s only had one year of college and no training camp yet, you can see that he’s going to be something else.”
The Spurs are set to return their entire roster, plus Nando de Colo, who the team selected with the 53rd pick of the 2009 draft.
“Well we thought we were very fortunate and we were very happy that we were able to sign our guys, that we could bring Boris (Diaw) back and Danny (Green) back,” Popovich said. “And they’re going to be even better for us this year, so that’s what we look for in improvement, for them to understand the system more, for Kawhi Leonard to be here in training camp, and so in a sense those three guys are like new players for us. We regard them almost like free agents, and we look forward to them rounding out the group that’s been here.”
