Daryl Morey: Sixers Will Have Lots Of Changes Beyond Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Nick Nurse

May 6, 2024 4:01 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers plan to have a significantly different roster next season as they enter the 2024 offseason with approximately $65 million in cap space. Beyond Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Nick Nurse, there could be many new faces with the Sixers.

"We're not going to have continuity," Morey said Monday at the 76ers' headquarters in New Jersey. "We'll have continuity with our stars and our head coach but we're going to have a lot of changes this season."

The Sixers won at a 65-win pace with Embiid, but went 16-27 without him.

"I feel like I could have done a better job with the players so that we were in a better spot to win without him," Morey said. "That said, we do spend 90% of the time figuring out how to win the title with him. It can't be a big focus, how we play without him. We know that team can't win a championship. It's really, how do we manage through it better? I felt like, on me, the depth wasn't quite there when he was out to win at the level we wanted to win at."

Klay Thompson, Magic Have Mutual Interest

May 6, 2024 2:53 PM

The Orlando Magic will be active in the offseason to upgrade their roster, especially with perimeter shooting and Klay Thompson is one player on their radar. The Magic can create upwards of $60 million in cap space.

"One name to keep any eye on is Klay Thompson," said Shams Charania. "I'm told there is mutual interest between the Magic and Klay Thompson."

Thompson is entering free agency for the first time since 2019 and his future with the Golden State Warriors is uncertain. The Warriors are expected to try to reduce their payroll and luxury tax this offseason.

Clippers Have Made Multiple Extension Offers To Paul George Below Max

May 6, 2024 2:58 PM

The Los Angeles Clippers would like to retain both Paul George and James Harden this offseason, but so far they have tried to do at a discount. The Clippers signed Kawhi Leonard to a discounted extension worth $152.4 million over three years.

"This Clippers team fully intends to keep this group together, they want to bring back Paul George as a free agent or give him an extension, but they have not been able to reach an agreement with Paul George," said Shams Charania.

"They've made multiple contract offers below the max. They have not been able to reach a deal. They're going to keep trying."

If George tests free agency, there is a general expectation that he will be offered a max contract by the Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic.

Rival Teams Think Sixers Could Trade For Jimmy Butler

May 5, 2024 5:27 PM

Jimmy Butler reportedly wants an extension from the Miami Heat this offseason. Butler has two years remaining on his current deal, including a player option for 2025-26. It's unknown where the Heat stand on adding even more guaranteed money to their payroll moving forward. Butler will turn 35 years old ahead of next season and missed the Heat's first-round series loss to the Boston Celtics due to a knee injury.

If the Heat balk at extending Butler, rival teams believe the Philadelphia 76ers could attempt to swing a trade for the veteran wing. The Sixers project to have more than $60 million in cap space this summer. Daryl Morey will be seeking to fill out the roster around Joel Embiid and re-sign Tyrese Maxey.

Butler previously played for part of one season with the 76ers. Philadelphia acquired Butler from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Following the end of the 2018-19 season, Butler was acquired by the Heat in a sign-and-trade deal with the Sixers.

Tyronn Lue, Clippers Haven't Discussed Extension All Season

May 6, 2024 3:04 PM

Tyronn Lue has one season remaining on his contract with the Los Angeles Clippers and the two sides have not held extension talks. Over the past few months, contract values or elite NBA head coaches has gone up dramatically with Steve Kerr, Gregg Popovich and Erik Spoelsta among the extensions.

"They have not discussed an extension with him the entire season," said Shams Charania. "Now, they're focus will be can we get an extension done with Ty Lue?"

The Los Angeles Lakers have been linked with interest in Lue. Lue and the Lakers were unable to agree to terms on a contract back in 2019.

Donovan Mitchell Was 'Tired Of Losing In The First Round'

May 5, 2024 9:43 PM

Donovan Mitchell and the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Orlando Magic 106-94 in Game 7 to advance to the second round of the playoffs. Mitchell scored 39 points in Game 7 after scoring 50 in Game 6.

Cleveland's 18-point comeback is the largest in a Game 7 since at least 1997.

The Cavaliers were resilient against the Magic one season after they were eliminated in five games in the first round by the New York Knicks.

"I'm tired of losing in the first round," Mitchell said. "You work too hard. We work too hard. That was my mindset ... for me, just be in attack mode. I'm battling through what I'm battling through, but I could battle through it and figure it out, or rehab it for the next three or four months. That's where I'm at mentally."

"[Mitchell is] the guy that can pull everybody along, not just with his skill but in spirit as well," Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. "When you see your teammate, a guy you care about playing that way, you don't want to let that guy down so you go out and do whatever you can to help that guy.

"We talk about how everybody has their style and their piece of leadership here and that's how Don leads, by being special in the moment. His teammates want to be a part of it."

"I don’t mean this disrespectful, but it doesn’t really mean much,” Mitchell said. “We didn't come in just to win the first round. We accomplished one goal, now we have to do it again. That’s the mindset."
