Isiah Thomas says he will make a run at Chris Webber - perhaps as a way to tweak Larry Brown - but it is unlikely that the Knicks will land the veteran power forward.

People close to Webber, who finalized a buyout with the Sixers last night, said that he is looking to sign with a contender. Dallas, Miami, Detroit and Phoenix are seen as candidates to sign him.

Thomas has known Webber since the forward was a star high school player in suburban Detroit. The Knicks came close to trading Quentin Richardson for Webber over the summer. Thomas did not mention Webber by name, but when asked hypothetically about a veteran power forward becoming available, the Knicks president/coach said: "That hypothetical would be interesting."

"Our job is to be interested in players that have been released, bought out and traded," Thomas added. "If there is a fit we'll make it work."
