Timberwolves center Michael Olowokandi will be fined for a team rules violation less than a full week into training camp.

Olowokandi would have arrived late to Saturday night's intrasquad scrimmage at Chaska High School, the Wolves' first public appearance under new coach Dwane Casey, but Casey told Olowokandi over the phone he would not play and then instructed the 7-footer to return home.

"He was late," Casey said. "He'll be fined for a missed practice. I understand he said his car service was late. That was his excuse.

"We've had a good camp. We pride ourselves on discipline. It's good that it happened now. I'm not going to treat it as a big deal. It's a finished subject as far as I'm concerned, but I (sent) a message to the guys that being on time is one of our major rules. We have a lot of rules, and that's one of our major rules. It's been handled. It's over and done with."

Casey said players who live in the area were given permission to arrange their own transportation to the scrimmage. Casey said all of the other players were on time.

"It is what it is," Casey said. "We're going to have discipline. We're going to have rules. We're going to have guys (not) being on time, and it will be handled. I hope he's the last."
