It has been three weeks since the Warriors traded for point guard Nick Van Exel -- part of a nine-player trade with Dallas that sent Antawn Jamison to the Mavericks.

And still no word from Van Exel.

Van Exel has not spoken publicly about the trade. However, his agent said in the days following the move that his client was disappointed to be leaving Dallas. There was no press conference afterward, the Warriors said, in part because they wanted to give Van Exel "some space" and also because it was too difficult -- during the offseason -- to round up the five players acquired from the Mavericks.

Van Exel's inaccessibility has fueled speculation that either he has asked the Warriors to trade him or that he won't report to training camp in early October. Further complicating matters is that it appears Van Exel's agent, Tony Dutt, is trying to get the Warriors to guarantee the final year of Van Exel's contract, worth $12.7 million.

Warriors team president Robert Rowell downplayed any potential problems involving Van Exel.

"Yes, we've had people speak to him," Rowell said last week. "We don't need to get specific (as to whom). We've got an entire basketball staff and several of them have had conversations with Nick as well as his agent."

However, three members of the Warriors' basketball operations staff -- general manager Garry St. Jean, coach Eric Musselman and executive director of basketball operations Otis Smith -- each said they hadn't spoken to Van Exel since the Aug. 18 trade.
