The long-rumored trade of Heat forward/center Brian Grant to the Mavericks officially fell through when Dallas acquired forwards Danny Fortson and Antawn Jamison for Van Exel in the blockbuster swap with the Warriors.

All along, the holdup appeared to be that Mavericks owner Mark Cuban didn't want to give up Van Exel, but apparently that wasn't the case.

"I just wonder about whether, if Nick was going to be part of a deal all along, if the Mavericks could have gone back and worked out a deal with Miami for Brian Grant," Tony Dutt, Van Exel's agent, told The Dallas Morning News. "I know Miami has loved Nick for the last couple of years. But after talking to Mark, it was clear he feels the team needed a legitimate small forward as much as it needed a center."
