Washington Wizards forward Kwame Brown was arrested last Friday in his home town of Brunswick, Ga., and charged with driving under the influence, failure to maintain a lane and having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle, all misdemeanors.

Brown, the first NBA player to be drafted No. 1 out of high school, was pulled over at 2:59 a.m. Friday after Glynn County police observed his 2003 Hummer H2 cross the center line of Spur 25, a main road in Brunswick, Lieutenant Jim Kelly of the Glynn County Police Department said.

Brown, who had at least one other passenger in the vehicle, failed a roadside sobriety test, which helps determine balance and coherence, Kelly said. He then took a Breathalyzer test, which determined Brown's blood alcohol content to be .147, Kelly said. Georgia's limit for being legally drunk is .08.

Brown was then arrested, booked at Glynn County Detention Center and later released on bond. No court date for his arraignment has been set.

"He cooperated fully with everything," Kelly said.

Brown, 21, also could be suspended or fined by the NBA for violating league policy. The 6-foot-11 forward declined to comment yesterday through a representative.

"I have spoken with Kwame regarding the incident," Wizards President of Basketball Operations Ernie Grunfeld said. "He and his representatives are handling the situation and we will have no further comment until the matter is resolved."

It is the second arrest for Brown since he was drafted by the Wizards in 2001. In April 2002, Brown was arrested for driving 120 mph on Interstate 16 in Georgia. He was cited for speeding.
