Terry Porter dreamed of playing for the Milwaukee Bucks and never got the chance.

But the Milwaukee native finally will get the opportunity to come home again, this time as coach of the Bucks. Porter, 40, is to be named the eighth coach in franchise history at a news conference this afternoon, according to sources.

The Bucks brought Porter back for a second interview Sunday. Sources indicated that Atlanta Hawks interim coach Terry Stotts, Detroit Pistons assistant Mike Woodson and Phoenix Suns assistant Marc Iavaroni also received second interviews.

But it was Porter, with just one year of professional coaching experience, who won over new general manager Larry Harris and the team owner, Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.).

Porter would replace George Karl, who was fired July 20 with one year left on his lucrative contract.

Kohl, reached Tuesday night in La Crosse, declined to comment.

Porter served as an assistant on the Sacramento Kings' staff last season, after ending a stellar 17-year National Basketball Association playing career.
