There still is hope for the Warriors.

A source close to the situation said Warriors free agent point guard Gilbert Arenas returned to the West Coast late Thursday without signing a deal with the Washington Wizards.

In another development, a gun charge Arenas is facing stemming from a June traffic stop was made public Thursday.

The Washington Post reported Thursday that Arenas met with Wizards president of basketball operations Ernie Grunfeld and coach Eddie Jordan in Washington on Wednesday.

The meeting, which came one day after Wizards management met with Arenas in Southern California, spawned rumors that a signing was imminent. The two sides reportedly met again Thursday, according to the source, before Arenas flew back to the West Coast.

The Wizards, getting a boost from the NBA's increase of the salary cap to $43.8 million, have $8.5 million in cap space, according to The Post. They could offer Arenas more than the $4.9 million mid-level exception the Warriors are limited to in the first year of a multiyear deal. But Washington may not want to use all of its remaining cap space on one player.

"We had a nice meeting with Gilbert, and we're going to continue to talk," Grunfeld told The Post. "We're going to talk to other free agents that are out there as well."
