Representatives for Washington Wizards guard Jerry Stackhouse were trying to negotiate a settlement with the woman who accused the player Sunday of assaulting her in Atlantic Beach, N.C., according to his attorney.

"I can say that we are in discussions," said Wes Collins, Stackhouse's Morehead City, N.C.-based attorney. "I'm waiting to hear back from opposing counsel. We are hopeful that we can come to an agreement that satisfies both parties."

According to a court documents, Patricia Nagy, a 37-year-old real estate agent, accused Stackhouse of "grabbing her around the neck and taking her to the ground" after the two argued over the length of his stay at a beach house he had rented for the prior week. Nagy has declined to comment about the incident.

Should an agreement between Nagy and Stackhouse's attorneys be reached, it would require Stackhouse to pay Nagy an undisclosed sum of money to drop her charges against the player, said a source familiar with the talks who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Stackhouse was arrested hours after the incident by Atlantic Beach police on a misdemeanor charge of assault on a female.

Stackhouse acknowledged Tuesday that there was "unintentional contact" with Nagy when he tried to snatch the copy of the lease from her during their argument.

"I was leasing this house and I thought I had one more day in it," Stackhouse said during a phone interview. "She was holding a lease and I asked to see the lease she had in her hand because I never signed a lease."

It is unlikely that prosecutors investigating the case would continue with the case against Stackhouse should Nagy drop the charges.
