The Washington Wizards filled their dual needs for a small forward and an outside shooter when they selected Georgia's Jarvis Hayes with the 10th pick of last night's NBA draft. They also addressed their need to bolster depth at point guard by drafting Maryland's Steve Blake with the ninth pick of the second round (38th overall). Blake will be reunited with Juan Dixon, his backcourt mate when the Terps won the NCAA championship in 2002.

"We thought this was as perfect as we could imagine," Wizards Coach Eddie Jordan said. "We got a solid, solid kid in Jarvis Hayes, someone who can spread the defense out for us. He's an athlete who can defend very well. Steve Blake is a very exciting point guard with some good size. That's what we wanted -- someone to really push the ball, be uptempo. It's almost a perfect situation for us tonight."

The Wizards targeted both players after stellar workouts. The 6-foot-7 Hayes, who left the scandal-plagued Georgia program after his junior season, was the player Jordan wanted. And, according to outgoing general manager Wes Unseld, what Jordan wanted, Jordan got.

"I gave him all the input he wanted," Unseld said. "I think he will tell you that because my job as a GM is to try and make sure we get the best player but also to try and get the best player the coach wants that can play in his scheme of what he's trying to do. I think it worked out both ways."

Hayes, 21, and Blake, 23,will be introduced at a news conference Monday or Tuesday.
