Liz Robbins of the New York Post reports that the Knicks have just solidified one of their two major weaknesses. They have added depth to the point guard position by signing Frank Williams to a rookie scale contract so he can start working with the Knick?s summer league team.

As the 25th pick in last month?s draft, Williams received a 3-year, $2.68 million contract with a $ 1.7 million team option for a 4th season.

To help fill their second need, the Knicks have also stepped up negotiations with Timberwolves free agent center Rasho Nesterovic.

Nesterovic?s agent, Bill Duffy, said he would meet today with Scott Layden, the Knicks' president and general manager, in New York. Layden was unavailable for comment. Duffy said Nesterovic's interest in the Knicks was very strong and said "I think it's mutual."

As a restricted free agent, the Timberwolves have the right to match any offer made to Nesterovic. The most the Knicks have to offer is the $4.6 million mid-class exception. There is also the possibility of a sign and trade agreement, which could allow Nesterovic to receive more than the exception.

The Knicks had made preliminary inquires about the free-agent centers Keon Clark and Jerome James, but according to their agents, Layden had not yet called back to arrange interviews .
