Stuck backstage during the NBA Draft festivities last June in New York?s Madison Square Garden, Brendan Haywood waited patiently for his NBA career to begin. Little did he know how long ? and circuitous ? his wait would become.

The North Carolina star remained planted in the Green Room while player after player paraded on stage before him, until his name was called by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the 20th pick in the first round. Within minutes, Haywood swapped climates when the Cavs traded him to Orlando. Then five weeks later, Haywood was dealt again, this time to the Washington Wizards.

Before he could make his debut in Washington, Haywood tore ligaments in his left thumb in an exhibition game, forcing him to watch the first four weeks of the season in street clothes.

Now ? finally ? Haywood?s patience is paying off.

In his first nine games since coming off the injured reserve, the rookie center has emerged as the Wizards? leading rebounder (7.7 per game) and shot blocker (1.8). He?s also Washington?s third-leading scorer (9.1) while playing 25.1 minutes a game off the bench.

Better late than never, says Haywood.

"During that time I tried to stay in the best physical shape possible and work hard," said the 7-foot, 266-pounder. "I had a goal to get out there and be able to contribute right away, and because I worked hard, it?s paying off for me."
