Orlando Sentinel writer Jerry Brewer reports: During his month with the Orlando Magic, rookie center Brendan Haywood has yet to escape the feeling he's wearing nylon at a silk convention.

The Magic say they like Haywood. At 7 feet and 268 pounds, he is a legitimate center in a league with few legitimate centers. But the reality is this: It's hard to figure where he fits into the Magic's plans. Because of this, Orlando has explored at least one trade involving the big man.

Haywood was almost sent to Dallas at the end of last week as part of a four-team trade that would have brought Detroit point guard Mateen Cleaves to the Magic. Minnesota was the other team involved. The trade fell through, though various sources would not say why.

"We haven't ruled out anything," General Manager John Gabriel said when asked about Haywood. "We still like Brendan. It's hard to come by guys his size. It's a numbers situation that we'll have to work out."
