Mobley unhappy with officiating

Houston’s Cuttino Mobley can expect a call from the NBA today. There seems to be a good chance that he’ll be donating something to the "NBA Fined Players Fund".

Johnny Ludden of the San Antonio Express-News reports that Mobley had a couple of things to say about the officiating during the Rockets’ loss to the Spurs on Monday. After an 11-0 deficit in free throws during the first half, Mobley was issued a technical for throwing his mouthpiece after a blown call by the officials.

His frustration came to a boil after the officials ruled that a ball that went out of bounds was last touched by Mobley. They awarded possession to the Spurs. Replays later showed that the Spurs’ Stephen Jackson was the last to touch the ball.

After the game, Mobley shouted at official Bob Delaney.

"San Antonio had help," Mobley said. "It's as simple as that. They can't beat us straight up and they know it."

Did Yao hit the wall pre-Shaq?

With all the recent controversy surrounding the much anticipated matchup between ‘The Future’ Yao Ming and ‘The Present’ Shaquille O’Neal, could the excitement already have peaked before the two even face off on Friday?

If you listen to Houston Chronicle write Dale Robertson Yao Ming has hit the wall.

‘Yao couldn't shoot. Yao couldn't rebound. Too often, Yao couldn't even stay vertical. He had no touch, no rhythm, no mojo. His right foot had turned into a second left one. Could he have been suffering from an early case of the Shaq shakes? Nah. He just stunk. It happens,’ writes Robertson.

His coach Rudy Tomjanovich defended Ming, saying that this is just a bump in the road that every NBA player experiences at one point or another in their careers, especially when they are on the side of youth.

"This is the NBA," said Tomjanovich. "It's tough. You're going to have your ups and downs. You expect it from any young player. Yao has to experience these games." "Sometimes you're a zero. Sometimes it's just not going to be there. The challenge is to not have it emotionally turn into a negative 10. You find a way to make something good happen. You set a pick; you get a rebound." Yao’s bad night which these guys are referring to included 11 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists – a career night for half of the centers in the league.

But Houstonians have seen the future, and it was raised out East. It is hard to make a case against Ming already being a dominant force in the NBA, and the scary thing is he is only going to get better. Ming might not have been the best rookie on the floor last night – that honor went to super diaper Amare Stoudamire – and it certainly appears that he is not ready for someone with the mite of O’Neal.

"It seems to me that, physically, I may still be needing a little bit," Yao replied through his interpreter when asked to reflect on his pending joust with O'Neal. "I think I may need a suit of armor for Friday night."

Insult deflates Marbury

Stephon Marbury was up to his old tricks last night against the Houston Rockets, and it just may have been the thing to bring his team down.

Marbury, who only last month had a verbal war with ex-teammate Kevin Garnett through the press, taunted Rockets point guard Steve Francis during a timeout in the second quarter according to a report by Janny Hu in the Houston Chronicle. Marbury told Francis that he (Marbury) was the real All-Star on the court, but the self-confessed All-Star's comments would come back to haunt him as he went cold from the field, shooting 9-for-23 the rest of the night.

"You never want to blame a back-to-back for a loss, because it can be done," said Marbury, who still finished with 32 points. "You've just got to focus. The last game is in the past, the next game is the future, this game is the present."

"It was the battle of the No. 3s," Rockets guard Moochie Norris said. "No. 3 vs. No. 3. It was fun for me to watch. (Marbury's) the leader. He going to talk to his teammates and try to motivate them. That's his job, he's the point guard, he's like the second coach. That's the job he has to go out there and do."
