Harrick hired by the Nuggets as scout, consultant

Jim Harrick is back in basketball.

Harrick, who resigned from the head coaching position at the University of Georgia in March in the wake of a scandal that forced the school to withdraw from postseason play, was hired Monday as a scout and coaching consultant for the Denver Nuggets.

Harrick, 64, compiled a 23-year college coaching record of 470-235 at Pepperdine, UCLA, Rhode Island and Georgia. He led UCLA, alma mater of Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe, to the national title in 1995.

Harrick came under fire at Georgia late last season after a former player made accusations about having received improper benefits and academic credit for a class he did not attend. The brunt of the blame was placed on Harrick's son, Jim Harrick Jr., who was fired as an assistant after the school charged him with academic fraud.

"We are thrilled to add coach Harrick to our staff,'' Vandeweghe said. "He possesses a remarkable basketball mind and will be a great asset to us.''

Anthony easing in

Forty-four years ago, Wilt Chamberlain averaged an NBA rookie record 37.6 points per game. While no one is predicting Nuggets rookie Carmelo Anthony will come close to that mark, he does figure to at least challenge for the team's scoring lead. General manager Kiki Vandeweghe has cautioned Anthony, however, just how tough the NBA treats rookies, Chamberlain's numbers notwithstanding. He recently showed Anthony the scoring averages of current superstars such as Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady, Kevin Garnett and Dirk Nowitzki when they were rookies. None averaged more than 10.5 points. "I guess what he was trying to tell me is to take it game-by-game and don't try to go out there and do too much," Anthony said on the eve of training camp. "If I can just go there and play how I play, stay focused, stay calm and find my teammates (for assists), then I think I will be pretty good."

Andersen: No big deal so far

Negotiations between the Denver Nuggets and free-agent forward Chris Andersen remained at a stalemate throughout the weekend.

"There's nothing new," Andersen's agent, Marc Fleisher, said Sunday night.

Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe and Fleisher spoke Saturday, and no agreement was reached. While Andersen has said the Nuggets have offered a one-year guaranteed deal for the NBA minimum of $638,679, a source said the offer is not fully guaranteed.

"We'd like to have him in when (training) camp begins (Tuesday)," Vandeweghe said. "If not, we'll go with who we have."

Fleisher said Andersen "hopefully" will be signed by the start of camp. Fleisher would not say whether the delay is because other teams are in the mix or because a fully guaranteed deal is being sought from the Nuggets.
