Veteran swingman Bryon Russell, whom the Jazz have opted not to re-sign, reportedly is close to signing a free-agent contract with the Washington Wizards. Russell has long been rumored to be the subject of sign-and-trade discussions with the Wizards, including one proposed deal earlier this summer supposedly involving point guard Tyronn Lue and shooting guard Hubert Davis. More recently, the Washington Post reported talk of a potential straight Russell-for-Lue swap. Now, though, it appears the Jazz may be unwilling to take on Lue's contract, leaving Russell on his own to work out a deal. ESPN.com reported that could happen sometime this week.

Meanwhile, free-agent point guard Rusty LaRue — who finished last season on the Jazz's playoff roster — is headed to Italy. LaRue, who has bounced in and out of the NBA since turning pro in 1996, has signed to play for Varese of the Italian League. The Jazz did not intend to re-sign him, either. Also, the ESPN Insider Web site is reporting that free-agent point guard William Avery may attend fall training camp with the Jazz.
