They made things entertaining for a while, which no one expected, but it seems as though the Yankees were just in too big a hole to climb out of in time for the postseason. Even with one of the most dangerous offenses in the history of Major League Baseball, they haven’t been able to overcome their inconsistent pitching as of late. The Wild Card is still a possibility for the Yanks, but the AL East has slipped from their radar. I’m trying not to give up hope once again, but my patience is waning.
Cuban Set to Dance: Dallas Mavericks ’ owner Mark Cuban is set to compete on the fifth season of ABC’s ‘Dancing With The Stars.’ Cuban will attempt to win the trophy back for the Dallas area after Apolo Anton Ohno stole the limelight from season three’s winner, Emmitt Smith. I’m not really a fan of the show, but Ms. Scoop is which means I’m forced to watch it from time to time. I suppose that’s a fair trade for all the sports she’s left watching while spending time with me. Good luck to Cuban. Let’s just hope he doesn’t make a fool of himself.
Gordon Looking for Contract: Bulls’ guard Ben Gordon would like to negotiate his contract before the start of the regular season. Chicago opens their season on Halloween against the Nets, which gives them roughly two months to extend Gordon’s contract. Ben feels it’s time to for the Bulls to show him some love after helping his team get to the playoffs and beating the defending champion Heat this past April. He hasn’t said this, but I’d assume that Ben might look elsewhere at the end of the season if Paxson doesn’t step up to the plate and keep him in red-and-black for the long-term.
Wells Wins in Debut: Earlier this month David Wells thought his Major League career was over, but after the Dodgers picked him up late last week he was given a second chance. Last night he made his debut with Los Angeles on Sunday Night Baseball against the Mets and led his new team to victory. Wells pitched five effective innings en route to a 6-2 win for the Dodgers, helping the team avoid a sweep at the hands of New York. Boomer is a big-game pitcher, and as August turns to September the games become more meaningful.
Soriano Set to Return: The Chicago Cubs will have Alfonso Soriano back this Tuesday when the team opens a series against the Milwaukee Brewers. He will be activated just in time to help the team during their stretch run towards the postseason, which seems a lot more likely than it did just two months ago. I’m really pulling for the Cubs to make the postseason, even though I would never consider myself a Chicago fan (I prefer to the Bronx version of the pinstripes). Although if the Cubbies were to win a World Series this fall, Major League Baseball would be without a lovable loser…
Kitna Opts to Sit Out: Lions’ quarterback Jon Kitna opted not to play against the Indianapolis Colts this weekend because of some pain in his back. J.T. Sullivan, who’s in a battle with Dan Orlovsky for the back-up job, started and played the entire game as Detroit lost 37-10 to the defending champions. I’m really pulling for Orlovsky to win the job of spelling Kitna, for the sole reason that we went to the same high school in Southwestern Connecticut. Good job Dan, make the Gaels proud!
Samuel Expected to Return: New England cornerback Asante Samuel is set to return to Gillette Stadium and join the Patriots, effectively ending his “holdout.” Samuel will sign a one-year franchise tender with the team worth roughly $7.79-million as he enters his fifth professional season. I knew Samuel would eventually join his team, but a part of me hoped that he would end up forcing a trade. That’s just what the Pats needed – a playmaker back in their secondary. With my luck New England will go 19-0 breaking my heart and those of Dolphins’ fans everywhere.
