SCOOP DU JOUR: Iverson With The Knicks, Joe Alexander, Lincecum's Cy Young & More
Allen Iverson and the Knicks is a marriage out of necessity, forecasting Joe Alexander's future, why there hasn't been any players compared to Magic or Bird, plus Tim Lincecum's Cy Young and the possibility of Pacquiao/Mayweather at Cowboys Stadium.
STANDING 10: Retire Me Not
Even though LeBron James is well-intentioned in his hope of the NBA retiring #23, there are so many problems with this notion that it is difficult to find a place to begin.

Certainly by now most of you are already familiar with my Floor Impact Counter and Reina Value. (Please click here to familiarize yourself with the systems.)
I also use the FIC to calculate team totals, both by game and for the season.
In order to determine my team rankings, I have calculated the difference between a team's own FIC per game and their opponents' FIC for the entire season.
The number in parenthesis is the difference between their FIC differential so far this season and their differential from last season, which clearly goes a long way in determining how significantly a team has improved or declined.
• RealGM calculates the Floor Impact Counter using the following formula: (Points + .75 Defensive Rebounds + Offensive Rebounds + Steals + Assists + Blocks - .75 Field Goal Attempts - .375 Free Throw Attempts - Turnovers - .5 Personal Fouls)
Team: 08-09 FIC Differential (Improvement from 07-08)
1. Cleveland Cavaliers : 23.9 (23.4)
The Cavs began the season 1-2 with losses at Boston and New Orleans but have gone on to win 13 of 14 and have a soft schedule to begin the month of December. Being the top-ranked team in the NBA is a good way to answer the 2010 call, but it begs the question of just how much is it LeBron because that supporting cast still can't at all compare with Kobe's or KG's.
2. L.A. Lakers : 23.4 (9.0)
Andrew Bynum has logged a double-double in four of his past five games.
3. Boston Celtics : 18.0 (-1.7)
The Celtics are getting consistent scoring from places beyond Pierce, Allen, and Garnett this season, including Tony Allen, who is averaging 9.0 per game.
4. Utah Jazz : 15.9 (-0.2)
Utah is +8.8 at home and -2.8 on the road.
5. Portland Trail Blazers : 14.6 (15.5)
The Blazers are playing to the slowest pace in the NBA, but only the Cavs have been more efficient offensively, and Portland also has the best offensive rebounding percentage.
6. Orlando Magic : 13.0 (6.0)
I still believe point guard is a position the Magic will need to upgrade, but they have actually outperformed their opponents this season. The position isn't one of strength in the Southeast Division.
7. Dallas Mavericks : 7.9 (-1.4)
The Mavericks have abandoned the Princeton offense and are triggering many of their halfcourt sets out of the pick and roll.
8. Denver Nuggets : 7.2 (-0.7)
The Nuggets were first in the NBA in blocked shots last season, and I was expecting a major drop off in this category with the loss of Marcus Camby, but they have only dropped to third.
9. New Orleans Hornets : 4.9 (-4.2)
Peja Stojakovic is still shooting just 39.5% from beyond the arc, but he has shot 7-12 in his past two games. He is shooting 41.7% in their six losses and 38% in their eight wins.
10. Miami Heat : 3.3 (18.9)
Michael Beasley is 1-for-2 coming off the bench, going scoreless at Phoenix in their 107-92 win and then scoring 24 in their loss at the Clippers.
11. Phoenix Suns 2.7 (-13.5)
The Suns are 1-1 without Shaquille O'Neal this season.
12. Houston Rockets : 2.5 (-8.3)
The Rockets are seventh in point differential with a mark of +3.4.
13. Detroit Pistons : 2.2 (-13.6)
Jason Maxiell has averaged 9.8 points per game over this past five.
14. Indiana Pacers : 1.8 (5.6)
The Pacers are 24th in offensive efficiency this season, down from 19th during the 07-08 campaign.
15. Atlanta Hawks : 1.6 (2.7)
Josh Smith should return this week, and for the season they are 4-0 with him and 5-6 without.
16. Toronto Raptors : -0.1 (-5.9)
Unlike his 2010 comrade LeBron, Chris Bosh has so far effectively deflected attention away to his free agency leanings.
17. San Antonio Spurs : -0.9 (-9.7)
The Spurs are 12th in points allowed per 100 possessions this season, down from 3rd a season ago.
18. Philadelphia 76ers : -3.8 (-4.3)
Blame for the Sixers' slow start is getting thrown on Elton Brand and although they may want to blame their defense, it has clearly been their inefficiency on offensive that has led to the struggles. They are 26th in offensive efficiency and 5th in defense.
19. Minnesota Timberwolves : -5.4 (11.7)
Kevin Love has shot 11-16 in his past two games after a stretch when he went 12-52 over eight games.
20. Chicago Bulls : -6.2 (-1.6)
The performance of Luol Deng has been utterly atrocious this season, hopefully for the Bulls and his expensive price tag, it has more to do with his hamstring injury than anything else.
21. Milwaukee Bucks : -8.0 (4.5)
The Bucks have gone from 30th in defense to 10th this season.
22. New Jersey Nets : -8.1 (-2.0)
The Devin Harris for Jason Kidd trade is looking increasingly excellent for the Nets with his 47 points against the Suns and 34 against Utah this week.
23. Golden State Warriors -8.8 -9.0
With their small ball lineup, the Warriors are the worst defensive rebounding team in the NBA, but because of how active Andris Biedrins is, they are seventh on the offensive glass.
24. Charlotte Bobcats -10.5 -2.0
Larry Brown has improved the Bobcats both offensively and defensively but not in the turnover differential department.
25. New York Knicks : -10.7 (6.1)
The Knicks continue to be absolutely horrible in the blocked shots department, with just 29 for the season. That trails the Spurs (29th) by 24 blocks.
26. Memphis Grizzlies : -14.4 (1.3)
The Grizzlies are 1-10 after starting the season 3-3.
27. Sacramento Kings : -14.7 (-6.3)
John Salmons has been excellent for Sacramento this season, averaging 25.5 in the four games before Saturday, but he is now day-to-day with a strained left thigh.
28. Washington Wizards : -14.9 -11.7
They all won't be as easy as Ed Tapscott's first win (124-100 over Golden State), especially with this roster.
29. L.A. Clippers : -15.4 (-3.8)
With the way Elton Brand is playing in Philly, it is beginning to look like that defection wasn't as devastating as it felt back in July. Zach Randolph has a great offensive skill set, and he'll allow Mike Dunleavy to run some of those same halfcourt sets.
30. Oklahoma City Thunder: -22.8 (-6.6)
The Thunder have been outscored by an average margin of 11.2 points per game. |
