Pelicans View Pierre Jackson As Asset, Remain Unsure On Signing Him For 14-15

Apr 18, 2014 12:36 PM

Dell Demps discussed the New Orleans Pelicans' future with Pierre Jackson, a leading scorer in the NBA D-League whom New Orleans never signed to a rookie scare contract.

''He’s an interesting one," Demps said. "He played really good in the D-League. I think he was the leading scorer. We’ve followed him and been in contact with him. When we made the trade last year, we knew we were giving up our draft pick and we kind of looked at him as our draft pick for this year. So we have his draft rights and he’s going to be experienced, a little bit older.

"Can I promise Pierre Jackson is going to be on our team next year? I can’t say that right now. But he’s definitely an asset. I want to make sure I say that. He’s done everything and exceeded expectations.''

Jackson was drafted with the 42nd selection in the 2013 Draft.

James Southerland To Sign With Pelicans

Apr 10, 2014 4:42 PM

The New Orleans Pelicans will use an injury exemption to create roster space to sign James Southerland out of the NBA Development League, a league source told RealGM.

Southerland’s deal for the remainder of the season won’t carry into 2014-15. The Pelicans had received an exemption that allows the team to exceed 15 players on the roster, which has sustained significant injuries to Jrue Holiday and Ryan Anderson.

The Pelicans announced Thursday that Anthony Davis (back) and Eric Gordon (knee) are out for the rest of the season.

Southerland made the Charlotte Bobcats’ roster out of training camp in October and appeared in one game before his release. The 6-foot-8 sharpshooter has averaged 14.7 points and 6.5 rebounds for the Los Angeles D-Fenders in the D-League.

ESPN first reported Southerland’s call up to New Orleans.

Anthony Davis Has 'Some Dirk, KG, Hakeem' In His Game

Apr 1, 2014 2:01 PM

Anthony Davis has had such a strong second and unique season in the NBA that comparisons to former players have almost entirely stopped.

“He’s his own player,” says Kevin Hanson, the Pelicans’ player development coach, who works closely with Davis. “He’s got some Dirk, some KG, and some Hakeem. I don’t think we’re even going to see what he really is for at least a couple of years.”

Davis ranks fourth in PER behind only LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Kevin Love. Davis also has more defensive potential than any player to enter the NBA since Dwight Howard.
