Jeff Adrien Signing With Timberwolves Under Hardship Exception

Nov 29, 2014 4:09 PM

Free agent power forward Jeff Adrien has reached agreement on a contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves under the NBA’s injury hardship exception, league sources told RealGM on Saturday.

With Ricky Rubio, Nikola Pekovic, Kevin Martin and Ronny Turiaf sidelined with injuries, the Timberwolves were granted a short-term exception to sign a 16th player to their roster temporarily and decided upon Adrien.

Adrien has averaged 4.8 points and 4.3 rebounds over four NBA seasons. A 6-foot-7 product who performs beyond his size with activity and athletic ferocity, he has played for Golden State, Houston, Charlotte and Milwaukee. Adrien averaged 10.9 points and 7.8 rebounds in 28 games to close the 2013-14 season with the Bucks.

Adrien, 28, went to training camp with the Rockets in October.

"He's just too valuable to us to move," Saunders said.

Saunders said he understands why teams with championship hopes want Brewer.

Timberwolves Discussing Corey Brewer Trade With Cavs, Rockets

Nov 16, 2014 5:50 PM

The Minnesota Timberwolves are discussing trading Corey Brewer with multiple teams, including the Cleveland Cavaliers and Houston Rockets, according to sources.

The Cavaliers and Rockets view Brewer as a notable boost for their wing depth.

Minnesota is believed to be seeking future assets in exchange for Brewer.

If Brewer winds up in Cleveland, he'd be reunited with Love, with whom he has a close relationship after their well-chronicled success on the fast break as teammates in Minnesota. The Rockets have been known to ‎covet Brewer since last season and they registered trade interest in the 28-year-old even before Brewer had a career-high 51 points against Houston late last season.

Kevin Garnett Interested In Purchasing Wolves When He Retires

Nov 14, 2014 11:20 AM

Kevin Garnett is interested in becoming an NBA owner when he retires as a player and would like to buy the Minnesota Timberwolves.

"I want to buy the Timberwolves. Put a group together and perhaps some day try to buy the team. That's what I want," Garnett said.

Garnett was drafted by the Wolves in the 1995 NBA Draft and spent 12 seasons there before being traded to the Boston Celtics.

The Timberwolves were valued at $430 million in January, according to Forbes Magazine. The next NBA television contract will be extremely lucrative and is expected to raise the price of the franchise.

Garnett has made $315 million during his career and has also earned millions in endorsements.

"He would be one of the best owners in the NBA because he understands what the players need and he understands what it takes to be successful in the NBA,” Billy King told Yahoo Sports.

Glen Taylor told the Associated Press on May that he was looking to add a minority partner who would hold an option to buy him out. Taylor also made it clear he is committed to keeping the team in Minnesota.

Ricky Rubio Out Indefinitely With Significant Ankle Sprain

Nov 8, 2014 3:21 PM

Ricky Rubio rolled his left ankle on a drive to the back in the second quarter of the Minnesota Timberwolves' loss on Friday to the Orlando Magic.

X-rays taken immediately showed no fracture, but Rubio made his way back to the locker room at halftime on crutches with his ankle wrapped.

Flip Saunders referred to Rubio’s ankle by saying he “popped it pretty good,” adding “it swelled up high” and said he always worries about such an injury being the dreaded, slow-healing high-ankle sprain.

An MRI on Saturday showed a significant sprain and the Wolves announced he's out indefinitely.

Jeff Zillgiitt of the USA Today reports that Rubio could miss seven to eight weeks.

Timberwolves Discussed Hiring Lionel Hollins Before Kevin Love Deal

Nov 7, 2014 12:42 AM

The Minnesota Timberwolves spoke to Lionel Hollins in the offseason about their open head coaching position, but the team had uncertainty due to the Kevin Love trade.

Flip Saunders ultimately did not hire Hollins and became the head coach himself. Hollins was later hired as the Brooklyn Nets' coach.

“We talked a lot about it,” Saunders said. “I think Lionel is a great coach. … But that whole thing was because of the Love situation. There was too much of the unknowns. Lionel, he’s a team who took a team to a conference finals, I thought that he was going to go to a veteran type team, and I couldn’t guarantee him that would be this type of team.

“I wanted to hire a coach that knew what we had, and since we didn’t know what we had, we went in a different direction, but he was one of the two or three guys that we talked to and seriously considered.”

Hollins did not seem interested in discussing the situation.

“We did the interview,” he said. “They hired somebody else. That’s where it went.”
