D-Fenders Acquire Shawne Williams

The Los Angeles D-Fenders have acquired former Los Angeles Lakers forward Shawne Williams, by way of a successful waiver claim.

Williams (6’9” / 230) was selected in the first round (17th selection) of the 2006 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers. Most recently, he spent 32 games (11 starts) with the Lakers this season, posting averages of 5.2 points and 4.5 rebounds in 20.2 minutes. The Memphis native has appeared in 247 career NBA games (34 starts) with the Pacers, Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks, New Jersey Nets and Lakers. Williams has also played for Guangzhou Liu Sui, of the Chinese National Basketball League.

Isaiah Canaan, Terrence Williams Named D-League Players Of The Week

Isaiah Canaan, a Houston Rockets rookie playing on assignment for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, and Terrence Williams of the Los Angeles D-Fenders, were named NBA Development League Co-Performers of the Week for games played Jan. 20-26. 

A 6-0, 188-pound guard out of Murray State, Canaan averaged 25.8 points, 6.8 assists and 4.5 rebounds to lead the Vipers to a 3-1 week.  On his second assignment with Rio Grande Valley, Caanan scored at least 19 points in all four games and, on Jan. 25 he recorded a season-high 34 points to go along with seven rebounds and seven assists in a 123-116 victory over the Austin Toros. For the season, Canaan is averaging 22.7 points, good for second best on the Vipers and seventh in the NBA D-League, to go with an NBA D-League-high 8.6 assists and 4.4 rebounds. 

Williams, a 6-6, 220-pound swingman from Louisville, averaged 27.3 points, 6.7 assists and 6.3 rebounds, guiding Los Angeles to a 2-1 week. On Jan. 24, he tallied a season-high 39 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists in a 118-111 win over the Reno Bighorns. For the season, Williams is averaging 18.1 points, 6.2 assists and 4.7 rebounds. The D-Fenders are 7-3 since Williams made his debut on Jan. 4.

Manny Harris Again Named D-League Player Of The Week

Manny Harris of the Los Angeles D-Fenders has been named NBA Development League Performer of the Week for games played Monday, Jan. 6 – Sunday, Jan. 12.

Harris, a 6-5, 185-pound guard from Michigan, led Los Angeles to a 2-1 record last week and averaged 35.0 points on .574 shooting (39-for-68).  On Jan. 10, he scored a franchise record 49 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists and three steals in a 133-124 win over the Idaho Stampede. 

This is the second consecutive Performer of the Week awarded to Harris and the fourth of his career. He is second in the NBA D-League in scoring with 29.7 ppg, and fifth in the league with 2.17 spg. Harris has tallied at least 30 points in six of his 12 games for Los Angeles this season.

Other top performers considered include San Antonio Spurs’ assignee/Austin’s Nando De Colo, Idaho’s Kevin Murphy, Maine’s Chris Wright, Rio Grande Valley’s Robert Covington, Sioux Falls’ Justin Hamilton and Springfield’s Darius Johnson-Odom.

James Southerland Drawing NBA Interest Amid D-League Play

In the midst of elevated play with the Los Angeles D-Fenders, James Southerland has met with NBA teams at the D-League Showcase in Reno, Nev., and is maintaining discussions with three other organizations, a league source told RealGM.

Southerland scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds in the D-Fenders’ win on Monday night, averaging nearly 10 points and seven boards since joining Los Angeles. He started the regular season with the Charlotte Bobcats and played one game, but he was released due to the team’s need to find a veteran forward in Michael Kidd-Gilchrist’s absence with a broken hand.

Southerland, 23, went undrafted out of Syracuse University, where he averaged 13.3 points and five rebounds and solidified himself as a knockdown shooter in his senior season. He played for the Philadelphia 76ers and Golden State Warriors in the NBA Summer League.

Chris Smith To Sign With D-Fenders

Chris Smith will sign with the Los Angeles D-Fenders.

Smith was recently waived by the New York Knicks to create a roster spot for Jeremy Tyler.

Smith averaged 11.3 points in six games with the Erie BayHawks of the D-League on an assignment from the Knicks.

Manny Harris of the Los Angeles D-Fenders has been named NBA Development League Performer of the Week for games played Monday, Dec. 30 – Sunday, Jan. 5.

Harris, a 6-5, 185 pound guard from Michigan, led Los Angeles to a 3-0 record last week and averaged 29.3 points, leading his team in scoring all three games. On Jan. 4, he recorded a double-double with 27 points and 12 rebounds in a 107-94 victory over Bakersfield. He followed that up scoring 31 points to go along with 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals in a 99-95 win at Reno.

This is the first Performer of the Week honors for Harris this season and the third of his career. He is second in the NBA D-League in scoring with 27.9 ppg. Harris has tallied at least 21 points in all nine of his games for Los Angeles this season.

Other top performers considered include Idaho’s Pierre Jackson, Maine’s MarShon Brooks, Santa Cruz’s Dewayne Dedmon, Sioux Falls’ DeAndre Liggins and Springfield’s Darius Johnson-Odom.

Terrence Williams Acquired By D-Fenders

The Los Angeles D-Fenders have acquired guard Terrence Williams, by way of a successful waiver claim.

Williams (6’6” / 220) was selected in the first round (11th selection) by the New Jersey Nets in the 2009 NBA Draft. The Seattle native holds career averages of 7.1 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 153 career NBA games with the Nets, Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings and Boston Celtics.

Williams has also appeared in three NBA D-League games posting averages of 28.0 points, 11.3 rebounds and 10.7 assists for the Springfield Armor. The Louisville alumnus most recently spent time playing in Turkey for Turk Telekom Ankara and has also played internationally in China for the Guangdong Southern Tigers.
