Why isn't memphis winning more games

Post#1 » by kaskoosek » Mon Jan 14, 2008 9:44 am

I am really disappointed with memphis. I really think they have a very good team and I thought they would surprise. If memphis was in the east I really think the team would be playoff bound.

Now back on topic. One of the best powerforwards in the league.
The SF position in Gay is also excellent.
Miller SG is better than the leuge average in my oppinion.
The C and PG position are really not that bad and should not effect the team that much.

How come a solid bunch of players keep on loosing?

It's tradition. ;)

But yeah on paper they look like a pretty balanced team, maybe they really need a 6th man and a better coach?

They've lost about 10 games for 3 or less points and only won one. New and young players, a new and unexperiencied coach, not a good chemistry yet,... refs

They're a year or so away from being a good team. They need the experience, although you have to like their side on paper.

I've asked myself the same question. They have some very nice pieces. Mike Miller is very underrated IMO.

They will be good in a year or 2...Very good young core (Conley, Miller, Pau, Rudy, Darko, Warrick, Lowry)

Should they trade Pau do ppl think or keep him?

Rudy Gay is a ballhog , with very low basketball IQ, he only thinks about him, not the team, same with Lowry

Inexperienced youth, lack of leadership, poor defensive effort for long stretches, and lack of consistency in anything (well, other than turnovers).

How about defense? They allow 105 PPG while only scoring 100 themselves. Minus Seattle and thats the worst point differential in the entire league.

Offensively 100 ppg is good, but you just can't allow 105 back.

Defense is the bottom line. It sucks.

Yes, defense is the #1 reason but, when you have to not only play the other team, but also the refs it makes it that much harder.

Picture this, 1.9 seconds left in the game, down 1 to the Lakers 99-100, Kyle breaks to the basket, and this is a no call from inside the restricted area, not one foot, or a heel but, both feet completely inside the circle.
Image

And because we really don't have any superstars we can't benefit from the superstar calls that so many teams with them benefit from. Last night the difference was this The entire Grizz team went to the line last night 11 times all night, Kobe went the line 15 times by himself and the lakers as a whole went 28 times. 28 - 11 with the superstar going over half the time and more than the entire team did.

I swear, one time I think Darko farted near Kobe and sent Kobe to the line.

Well here's the video (toward the end)
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/recap?gameId=280113013

What I see is Kwame Brown camped in the restricted area for the entire 7.5 seconds. After 5.5 seconds he bodies into Kyle hitting him in the lower body, stomach, chest, and on the arm, from within the restricted area.

And this is what.......7 seconds after that complete ticky tack foul where Gay barely skimmed the top of his head with a finger to send him to the line for the game winning freethrow and fouled Gay out of the game.

I don't mind not getting the call if the game is called similiarly on both ends but, that's not the case in that game.

Go to the lakers portion of the board, they were thanking the refs for that one.

jumpshotting teams are streaky. sometimes they go in, sometimes they don't. Mike Miller is a monster though.

On my opinion, Iavaroni is the worst coach around the NBA

Lack of leadership, good decisions and clutchness are part of the problem. Coach Iavaroni is still learning as a head coach but he hasn't been impressive at all.

They lost so many games by 3 points or less, that's really hard on a young team. Especially when you get robbed like yesterday...

They end up being only an OK offensive team but they look good because they play at a fast pace. They shoot a decent percentage as a team but they have a one of the higher TO rates in the league, they also have one of the worst offensive rebound rates in the league so they aren't getting as many possessions in a game. Add that to the fact that they are a really bad defensive team and you have a pretty good picture of why they aren't good, average offense + terrible defense = bad team.

Their offense should get better as Mike Conley emerges into a star (I really wanted the Hawks to take him, he has looked great) but I don't know what they can do about that D. Try harder?

Pau makes and breaks the team. Just like Utah, the PFs have great offensive power, but terrible defense. Unfortunately they don't have an Andrei kirilenko to bail them out of those close games they should have won.
