Well, rough first inning, but who cares, right? It's been a year since he last faced major league competition.

I'm encouraged by his average fastball velocity, reported at just under 92 mph. Fastball got hit early but his off-speed stuff was good and he settled down. After the first, he fanned 4 and gave up 3 hits and only 1 run. Pretty promising, IMO.

His roughest stuff happened early; the HBP and walk were all in the first, he left a few meatballs up in the middle of the zone... Settled in really well and had I think 2 1-2-3 innings, including striking out the last three guys he faced. I like it; it's great to see him back in the game, where he belongs. Too bad Maddux retired, IMO. It would have been awesome to see Smoltz/Maddux in October. :D
