Re: Off-Season Thread
Werth signs with the nats for a monster 7 year deal.
Crawford is gonna want the same, and obviously theo is not going to give it to him.
For an off-season that looked so bright, it sure has gone down the **** real quick.

What kind of money did they THINK this guy was going to want? Pathetic.

Okay, Deal is done according to heyman. No extension as of yet.
This better not end up like it did with Victor. I hope to extend him before he hits the FA market.

Well, they certainly got me interested a lot more after this weekend. Sick bastards they are.
So what's the earliest they can announce the extension so it doesn't go on this year's luxury tax? The day of the first game?

Yeah around then. It will be similar to around when Beckett's extension was announced last year.

Theo is on his way to Orlando now. I don't think he comes back with Carl Crawford. Theo said he wanted a right handed bat, and to shore up the bullpen.

Re: Off-Season Thread
Gammons on NESN's hot stove special has brought up a couple of names, Carlos Quentin and old friend Matt Murton. He doubts both of them, but still fun.
Here's my theory on this, if you don't want to give crawford those 8 years or pay him, I understand. I can't really complain, cause you just landed the biggest name on the market this year. But if it's because he's a left handed bat (crawford), I don't think that should matter that much into your decision. So you're a left heavy team, not a big deal IMO.

IMO they will still make an honest effort at Crawford, but the pressure is sure off getting Gonzalez. Matt Murton is interesting, he just set the Japanese League record for hits a season. I'm sure there are better option tho.

Re: Off-Season Thread
Looks like the Sox are looking at Magglio Ordonez as well. He had a pretty solid year last year before he went down with the ankle injury. Can do much worse as a 6/7 hitter.
Ellsbury
Pedroia
Gonzalez
Youkilis
Ortiz
Ordonez
Drew
Salty Dog
Scutaro
I'm good with that lineup. Still need a ton of help from the pen and to get Lackey and Beckett to pitch much better.

Re: Off-Season Thread
If Beckett could even be somewhat of his former self (15 wins, 3.75 ERA... please?) and Lackey can maintain a decent amount of quality starts and Lester and Buccholz don't regress it won't matter what lineup we throw out there. It's a nasty pitching staff.

Re: Off-Season Thread
Magglio wouldn't be bad for one year.
Buster olney on the 5 o clock winter meetings special said the sox might go after carlos beltran who has one year left on his deal. If I'm not mistaken, we put a claim in for beltran this past summer when he was on waivers. Olney still expects us to make a hard push for Carl Crawford though.

Don't count out Crawford just yet...

Also talking with catcher, Russell Martin.

Asked about Crawford, Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said, "It's the same answer I gave yesterday. Obviously we're in a new situation now after we've made a major acquisition, but like I said, anything is possible, right?'

Re: Off-Season Thread
Well I would say the Sox sure did make an honest effort. Damn Jayson Werth contract. Oh well huge sign for the Sox. Can't complain when in your offseason you get Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford.
I now expect the Sox to atleast be looking to see what they can get for Jacoby Ellsbury. I'd also expect to see another right handed bat off the bench and the pen still needs some serious help.

Re: Off-Season Thread
YES!!!! Holy ****, I just woke up to this news. That's the second time I've woken up to the red sox landing a huge player in less than a week.
What an off-season.
When I went to bed at 11, he was all but in Anaheim. Guess we offered more money. Don't care, love it.
wooooo

Re: Off-Season Thread
Yeah when I went to bed around 10 PM all indications were that Crawford was on the verge of signing.... with the Angels. Got a few texts in my sleep that woke me up around 6 and I thought it was a joke. Not going to go out and say it's a great signing and give them an A+, but Crawford brings versatility and a dynamic aspect to our lineup next year. He's in his prime, and he's got power hitters behind him. First big name signing since Manny Ramirez. Didn't think this regime had it in them.
Are we going to lead him off? Bat 2nd? 3rd? I can't see Pedroia or Youkilis dropping below the 4 spot so my guess will be that Ellsbury will drop to #9.

Re: Off-Season Thread
Sox have an offer out to Russell Martin, as reported my multiple sources. Check ESPN or Boston.com
Sox close with Scott Downs according to a thread in the blue jays board. Too lazy to go and get the actual source. I think it was AOL fanhouse.
Downs would really bolster our bullpen. As for Martin, it's not that I don't want him, I just don't really care. If we get him I'll be happy I suppose, but if we lose out on him, I'm not gonna care at all. I don't mind running a line-up out there with salty and tek switching off, because we're stacked already.
