What is Tyrese Haliburton's game?
Great player, for sure. When he's clicking it makes the Pacers entertaining and able to compete with anyone.
But as far as I can tell, his game consists of:
Option 1: Stutter step into a three pointer
Option 2: No-look pass (whether necessary or not)
With some drives sprinkled in every now and then? Maybe?
I don't really get it. Obviously he's a great passer and I'm being a little facetious with option 2. And he's a great shooter, so crip walking into a bunch of threes looks amazing when the shot is on. Also have to admire that he's willing to give the ball up and doesn't want to dominate it.
But should he? And what if he did? Can he? These are more rhetorical questions. Cause when I imagine what his "bag" is I can't think of anything. I tend to only see him doing one of a few things, and doing them sporadically at that.

He’s like Ricky Rubio but can shoot and worse defender.

If he's Steve Nash-like in this era, you're gonna need to find his Amare Stoudemire/Joe Johnson for him to maximize the team success, since he's not going to be the guy you go-to late.

Nash can score at all 3 levels. Haliburton's goofy shot mechanics make him unable to stop on a dime and shoot over a defense in the mid range

Hali is Shaun Livingston before he had the injuries.

His teams rarely went to Nash in the clutch in the playoffs to get buckets. He was a facilitator. If that's Haliburton's style, then you need to bring in other players who will be your bucket getter. I mean, Tony Parker was not better than Nash in anybody's rankings, but I'd still rather have him in the playoffs, because he could just go and get us a bucket when the game was on the line.

This is a big problem.
Its not just with mid range though. I think the goofy shot mechanic causes issues everywhere. He's just found a niche for it.

A rich man's Livingston. Shaun never looked this prolific and never avg. 10ppg in any given season. He only avg over 5 apg in 2 seasons.

I give him credit for raising his game when it matters most -- when there is a $1 million bonus on the line for the in-season tournament and when he's playing for a supermax contract

He’s a very good shooter and has nice vision, plays with good tempo and likes to penetrate and kick. Great touch on passes and floaters. High on his game. He’s not really a driver, but he’s big and smart and can take open space if given to him.
Not really an iso scorer. Meh athlete. I wouldn’t call him quick but he’s decisive and covers ground efficiently when he wants to.
Awful defender. It’s mind boggling how bad he is on that end but also somewhat immaterial bc he’s a guard.
Not as good as he was hyped to be circa December 2023. Not as bad as he’s being criticized as now.

Yeah. Seems kind of right.
But what is all that though.
Mostly buzzwords and abstracts, cause his game doesn't really have definition.

I know we were talking about him in one of the game threads. I agree with your OP. People overrate this kid and he's like a cult classic movie...remember when Donnie Darko was a thing? That's Hali
