OT: How Often Do You Play?

Post#21 » by sikma42 » Sun May 5, 2024 6:32 pm

Used to play 3 times a week up until last year when son was born. Got a bit out of shape and I’m trying to hit the gym to lose another 5-10 pounds before going back. At 38, I’d don’t wanna jump back into with this extra weight.

I can still do most of the stuff I used to when I’m near my playing weight. I’m 6’5 245 and hope to get back to 235 before going hard again.

A lot of is luck and avoiding injury. *knock on wood*

Really cool to see some posters still being active or somewhat active when it comes to hooping! Grew up playing and loving basketball and played for hours each day in my backyard or at the park with my friends. That's all we ever did.

Im in my late 30s and I haven't hooped since my early 30s. 30yo to be exact - I was hooping on my birthday at the gym maybe 3-4x a week against mostly college age kids and I was in the best shape of my life or near it.

Would love to get back into it, but I haven't put much time into it. I just do machine cardio at the gym when I go now.

Ugh. I was a super intense rec, local gym, and outdoor pickup player from college until about 30. Unfortunately, I had several severe ankle sprains (both ankles) and just got to the point that it wasn’t worth the weeks of pain to play any more. I still shoot around on occasion, and now I’m old and can’t jump anyway, but I’m still unwilling to play in any kind of setting in which I can tweak an ankle. Sad, really, because I really enjoy it. Now 53.

On rare occasions I get to shoot around in the driveway for 20 minutes but I haven’t played a pick up game since having a kid.

I am nearing 58 but my knees won't allow me to play much more than 2x per week. Thank God my 13 year old plays/trains 5-6 days per week so I can get my basketball Fix. The Fact that he loves BB so much is one of my biggest blessings in life.

I'm nearly 62 and do shoot-arounds two to three times a week. Don't really play pick-up ball anymore. I don't have the range I used to but I actually shoot better after a lifetime of reps.

Put in thousands of hours between 12 and 16, but then got a giant, clean break (perfect straight line, like with a sword or something) in the biggest bone in my shooting wrist at 16. Had to get a pin inserted that is there to this day. It took five years before I could do a pushup without feeling it.

So, that pretty much ended my playing career, other than brief months-long snippets here and there over the years. Being a little guy, skill and athleticism were a huge part of my game, and after practicing hours every day for years, it was too frustrating trying to rebuild (never mind improve upon) the foundation I'd had as a kid. It's not fun being 21, etc., and knowing you'll probably never be as good as you were at 16. I didn't have to, but I let that take away a lot of the pleasure in playing, which I handled by (mostly) not playing.

I just turned 43, and the last time I shot a ball was probably about seven years ago, when I briefly got in fantastic shape while shooting on my own for a few months, which culminated in a single, very intense afternoon of ball at my local gym.

I have a public hoop near my house and it's in rough shape but I put a net on it and go out there and shoot. The asphalt is torn up and has wood lined through it for decor and the ball bounces funny, but it's a court nonetheless. The other hoop is bent at the rim so my friends and I only play half court  at least once a month we get a good session in of either a light game or shootaround or HORSE etc. There is a local gym with a nice gym and I've been up there too they have a league etc but I jsut play pickup if I get that direction, about 20 minutes away and people are down for it.
Cheers

I haven't played regularly since I was a teenager, so over 20 years. My knees feel the best they have in 10 years though so maybe wouldn't be a terrible time to play a little again. I am very rusty but if I get into a rhythm I can still shoot.

Still have a lot of fun even after 35 years of basketball.

That’s awesome. I consider it a blessing to still be able to get out there.

I had good handles and vision but overall I was horrible, I'm short and have zero athleticism. I was a good defender because I was aware of how bad I was and I knew the only way I'd stay on the team was by playing hard on defense.

I'm slightly younger than you are and I've started playing padel a couple years ago, I play 2hours twice a week, I can't play more because everytime I play every part of my body hurts for 3 days. I dont know how you play every day of the week, you must have taken good care of your body.

Thanks. Yeah I picked up the game late in college. Then after my first kid was born didn’t play for about 10 years. So I don’t have as much “mileage” despite me age.

Have a 5:30AM group on Wednesdays and a 6pm group on Thursdays.

Saturday has a 7:30AM group but I can only make that about half the time.

Always a good time.

That’s great. I’d have to get up and start stretching at 330 in order to play a 530 AM game lol
