Yao didn't have the mobile to be a factor against Jokic.garrick wrote:How is Yao Ming not on this list?
Yao has the length and size to slow down Jokic, smaller centers like Dwight or Ben Wallace aren't the right type of counter to Jokic if you ask me.

Man gtfoh with that made up bs. Tim might have played him in spots but there's a reason you guys had DRob, Rasho, Fabrizio, Tiago. Duncan would be in foul trouble every game if he guarded Shaq exclusively.

Chet Holmgren is not a rookie.
Sorry wrong thread. Tim Duncan is not a center(channeling Spurs fans).

Re: Choose the most capable Center of all time to slow down Jokic
I don't think there are any bad choices listed based on defensive ability. The key, i think, is which players will make jokic work the most on defense. By that i mean, i think the best player to slow jokic down would be the player that forces jokic to get out and run.
Jokic is far from being considered fast, but it's not like he can't move in the halfcourt on defense and isn't weak so the elite post players would give him a hard time, but i don't think they'd wear him out enough to hurt his offense.
So i'd pick someone like russell, chamberlain or robinson who could run the break with or without the ball. Jokic is forced to either run the break on defense and wear himself out which would hopefully affect his offense or stays behind to conserve energy and the nuggets play 4 v 5 on the fastbreak.

You need a ton of strength, length, and discipline in this matchup.
You need to have a good chance of outthinking him on any given play.
You need the quickness to play out to the perimeter in a modern defense.
You need sufficient pure length to deal with the high release shots.
You need willingness to bang.
So Russell, Duncan, and Hakeem are the obvious thoughts. Did Thurmond meet the criteria as well?

Re: Choose the most capable Center of all time to slow down Jokic
The best defender in NBA history obviously Hakeem Olajuwon. In the low/high post, in the mid range, on the perimeter, in transition, in vertical space, in lateral movement, in mental strength or with physical strength Jokic would have nowhere to go. His best bet is to try to outmuscle a guy who Shaq couldn't overpower.
Equally important: Jokic has no chance of guarding Hakeem well. Too quick and athletic plus has a jumper as a counter.
Don't get me wrong no one is shutting Jokic down for a whole series but Denver is outright losing this positional battle and hoping Murray can win games for them. That's as good as you can be against Jokic.

I think Thurmond has a better chance than any of those guys. Bill Russell is my goat, but Thurmond was an unreal post defender with Doc Oc arms. He was about 275 pounds, super mobile, and smart. He has Wilt like reach and Hakeem like mobility.

Re: Choose the most capable Center of all time to slow down Jokic
Anyone of them can hold their own against Jokic and slow him down. I Didn't say stop him as the title says "SLOW DOWN" each of the ones his mentioned has their own case to do so ... I'm going to say one thing though, each of them wouldn't always need the help double team Jokic as above they each have the capablity of slowing him down If not stopping him completly
My Personal Top 10 all time
Jordan, Russell, Bird, Duncan, Magic, Kobe, Curry, Shaq, Kareem, Bron
Top 5 will always be the same, 6-10 will change from time to time
I'm a Kobe fan

But, ya, Jokic was younger at the time.

If playing under more aggressive defensive rules, I think Wallace gives Jokic a really hard time. And I consider Hakeem the best defender here (not enough Russell footage to know)

It's Thurmond, people still aren't aware how ridiculous he was at his peak.

Duncan defended Shaq for the majority of the series in 2002, he needed because of Robinson injury. Still played almost 48 mpg.

Yeah, Thurmond was well known for studying his opponents tendencies, adjusting his strategy for different opponents and reajusting during the game. He was also very light on his feet, capable of switching on perimeter players (especially when he played with Wilt in the first 2 seasons). Willingness to bang is obvious in his case, he's also way longer than Russell and Hakeem (and probably Duncan).
