EDIT: Wait, are they also alleging he was betting on NBA games while on the roster?

Yes?

The thought of getting caught probably never even crossed his mind.

That's pretty much why the penalty is harsh. A crooked ref is bad enough but his actions on the court that could influence games are easily scrutinized and compareable to how the game was called by him and the other two officials. A player can change a close game by missing one shot, and since no one shoots 100%, you cannot prove his miss was intentional or just a percentage thing.

I'm as opposed to the expansion of gambling as anyone. But given the evidence and the risks of a more permissive approach, they had no choice here.

He will be able to appeal through the NBPA if the evidence is less strong than presented here.

He got banned for life? Gimme a break. People kicken someone when he's paid for a mistake and is down like he's a pedo or drug dealer need the kick in the head.

What the NBA is doing profiting off of an illness is far worse.

and he 100% deserved it. Guy is a fkin turd, no one feels sorry for him. look at the opportunity he got only to cheat the game and fans

He made a mistake and paid for it.

I feel for him alot. Gambling is an addiction and disease. The NBA and the Sportsbooks are the the real evil. But your world is safer now that Jontay is gone. I'm sure they caught the real problem today and it wont happen again in the NBA and no other families will suffer from the affect of gambling.

I don't think you understand how gambling works. This isn't a victimless crime. Some people, probably Raptors fans who were excited about Jontay's potential, bet the over. They lost money, solely because of Jontay's decisions. That's theft. Literal theft.

I had a friend who was addicted to gambling (on stocks), got busted by his wife, and had to go through the 12 step process (one of which was to meet me for coffee and admit what he had done). But he wasn't manipulating the market like Jontay was. JPJ didn't have an addiction problem. He had a fraud problem. And it is, or should be, criminal.

So does this mean less chance of NBA expansion team in Las Vegas?

Don't cry wolf for him then. He got what he deserved. Nothing to feel sorry for, he knew what he was doing.

Right it was bonehead. As I said. He has now paid far worse then the impact of the crime committed and I indeed hope he gets support for his gambling problems.

You talking like he's a drug dealer or worse? When the only reason his punishment is so sever is because it affects the NBA's bottom line.

Jontay has been punished and the NBA is the greater issue people should be talking about, but wont because they got their low hanging pinata to kick at and deflect.

Wait? What? You do realize there is someone on the other side of these bets right? That means someone else got cheated out of money due to his actions. It's effectively stealing money.

I don't think you understand the severity of his actions.

You do the crime, you do the time. He's actually getting off easy if this is just an NBA ban and no criminal charges. Look up fraud in the U.S. and what comes with that.

He’s become the face of sports gambling, so he can now get endorsements from bet365 and betRivers

Maybe this is a calculated move by him, as he can potentially make more with this stream than the NBA

I’ll see him again though when he interrupts me when I watch Kong x Godzilla CAM movie on iptv

I don't want to derail but everyone here going ballistic after hearing he bet the Raptors to lose = criminal activity? So native, did you know only 1 banker went to jail for the entire 2008 GFC? There are much worse crimes that go unpunished than Jontay stealing some money from gamblers

Jontay bet on one game for the raptors to lose so he could win some money.

NBA GMs bet on their teams to lose for decades so that their teams can with a lottery pick.

No, it's just hubris.

Gambling addiction would be losing excessive amounts of money through gambling and then gambling to try and win it all back. No indication here that he was losing boat loads of money from sports gambling and from the way he ran this operation, it's far more likely he was profitable as an edge sports bettor.

There are so many sports and athletes to bet on, betting on yourself and your team ought to be obviously wrong to the individual. So this went beyond the mere thrill of betting into the realm of what is known in securities law as insider trading, which is a crime. I presume he never bet on his brother's games because they did talk a lot and MPJ might have innocently divulged info about the Nuggets.

I also think we need to identify two separate issues:

-The NBA's partnerships with betting organizations and integration into broadcasts;
-The legalization of sports betting, and advertising, at the state and provincial level

The NBA is helping to promote a behaviour they are trying to restrict; but the ultimate issue comes from the decisions by authorities to legalize. This was going to be an issue regardless of what partnerships the league made with bettors.
