When Damon Stoudamire formally signs with San Antonio on Saturday, he will secure a salary of $538,054 for the final 75 days of the regular season, pro-rated from the NBA veteran minimum of $1.2 million.

Stoudamire's salary-cap figure will actually be a mere $339,975 -- because the league pays a portion of the salary on veterans with at least three seasons of service time who sign at the minimum rate -- but that small amount is still enough to potentially cost San Antonio some $2 million at season's end.

The Spurs, at present, are about $275,000 under the luxury-tax line. They need Stoudamire even more now than when they started pursuing him with Parker out indefinitely thanks to a heel injury, but bringing him in will prevent the Spurs from collecting the estimated rebate in the $2 million range afforded to all teams at season's end that stayed under the tax line ... unless San Antonio makes a trade between now and the Feb. 21 trading deadline that takes its payroll back below the line.

I think the Spurs will look for a trade to reduce the cap....

The only guy is Elson at the moment. We can get Patrick O'Bryant of Warriors for example.

Yeah... Elson is our only real trade bait.

othella harrington would also be a viable in a straight elson swap. there are a few other players that also fit that mold. even a barry+elson for KT deal sheds enough salary to work.

would still much rather see barry+elson+picks for mike miller. not sure it sheds enough salarys (only about 250k), but if we are goint to pay the tax, might as well make it worth it, no?

What about Barry + Elson for Ron Artest. It would make us a tremendous team.

a lot of people would be opposed to getting Ron on their team, but I would love it..even if he didn't re-sign, we'd get the contract off the books..and I'm pretty sure he said he wanted to play for a contender, and we are usually a contender..

realistically, we might have to give up Barry with Elson..I know everyone loves Bones..I do too..but we might have to give something to get something in return..Elson must be able to bring us something..Mike Miller would be nice..

Well, again, I'm kinda doubting we have the pieces for Ron. I could maybe see it, because of the expirings and a R1 pick. Maybe add in Mahinmi, because I think the Kings want expirings/a pick/young player for Ron. But it depends if either of the specific packages are right for the Kings.

But, I'd love it also, it'd be a dream come true, honestly. He'd look great in silver and black. I'd be in my glory getting him on this team. His versatility, toughness, and intangibles are just fantastic. I'd be even more excited for a possible series against Phoenix. Fitting in wouldn't be a problem other than adjusting to the system.

I think the best chance would be to go after him with the MLE this summer. I don't see the Lakers having the room for him in numerous ways. Dallas? Well, if Howard moves to the two, if not, I don't know about Ron coming off the bench. Miami's not the same situation it was, basketball-wise. Possibly a last resort because Shaq and Wade are on the team.

Well, we have what we have until we make a deal by the deadline, possibly. The current isn't bad. I don't think Elson and Horry are going to be pretty much ineffective players from now on. Horry's still getting into rhythm, and Elson's played little or not at all since coming back from injury.

Definite changes up front in the summer, though.

I like as, as we are...I agree that its not the nature of us and while saying that I have to remind everybody that we are the most successful organisation in the last 10 years!

I dont fear the lakers nor the suns or mavs or celtics...if we losse its not coz we didnt make a move for artest or miller...its coz of some injuries or us finally beeing to old!

Bring in Mike Miller, Pop. You listened to me on the Damon signing, so now i recommend picking up Miller for Barry, Mahinmi and a pick. Get it done RC!

I'm not really expecting a trade to happen, but I wouldn't rule one out, either.

what about joe smith, chris duhon and the right to swap #1 picks (lotto protected) for oberto, barry (who would be cut right away) and the rights to splitter. this would get you under the cap and give you an upgrade at pf.

Splitter won't be traded, not until he shows up in the NBA and then becomes a bust.
He's in the same boat as scola, we kept him for ages and never used him and eventually used him as a salary dump.
Splitter is rated very highly though by front office and will more than definalty have games in the silver and black.
