Post#1 » by SNash13 » Sun Mar 23, 2008 11:36 pm

Does anyone know a good website to read about the style of play, playbooks, practice methods, and so on.

I have two books but am in search for special drills for practice.

UCLA drill, its basically a 3 on 2 over and over. You need atleast 7 guys to run it. 3 on offense, 2 on D on both ends. The shooter runs back with 2 defensive players to form another 3 on 2. If you run it with more guys, I am not sure how you rotate in and out.

Its been a long time since I have played any organized ball.

Ahh, the UCLA drill. What fun that was.

Are you a coach or something? Player or what?

You have to know how to the fill the lanes and run the fast break to make it most effective. Spot up shooting. Well, I think you run guys off picks, baseline type of stuff. What point of view are you looking at this from? G, F or C spot?

I used to coach a little, and have some playing experiance. I think there is a few guys in here that can give some other insights such as SDU. Its been a while for me.

are you coaching a team or what? do you live in phoenix? the best coach i ever had the opportunity to play for was David Lopez at St. Mary's HS. i am sure if you emailed him for some advice he would be glad to help or he would let you sit it on one of his practices? his email address is on the St. Mary's HS website? if you do email him and he doesn't respond let me know, i can contact him or one of his sons' and get some advice for yah.

if you are not familiar with St. Mary's; it is the HS where Channing Frye and Jerryd Bayless went.

If there are any good coaches there that you can sit through their practices to get some good ideas would be great.
I was lucky enough to go to Lute Olson's clinic and Joan Bonivicini(spelling) clinic twice(UofA mens and womens respectively). Both were great and gave me a ton of ideas. I will try and look for my notes. If you have a quick enough group w/ little size, I always had success with a press defence. That sparked a ton of offence. It depends on how old these girls are.
I always enjoyed coaching the girls. You tend to see greater improvement over a the course of the season with less of the ego.

I used to run a few drills with all the movements without the ball. Flares and so forth, where I passed it to them and they caught and shot. Then run those with screens. High screens would work well if they all can shoot.

Here is a drill we used to run a few years back when I was playing Div 1 & 2. It is called the Tennessee drill among many other names which at this point in time escapes me.

Image

Here is how the drill works.

You Need:
A Basketball court with a ring at either end.
A Minimum of 8 players.
5 Basketballs.
1 Stop watch.

How it works:
1. A player starts underneath the ring with a ball. (top end of picture).
2. Passes to the foul line extended. (either way)
3. Sprints directly down the middle of the court. Along with the two players on the foul line extended.
4. Receives the ball back from the player they pass to and then passes to the other player on the other side of the court.
5. Both players that were on the foul line extended sprint down the side of the court and criss cross over once the player sprinting down the middle of the court has gone through.
6. Middle player proceeds to do a lay up.
7. Foul line extended sprinters receive a pass from the foul line extended players (bottom end of court) and shoot a jump shot from the foul line extended.
8. Middle player the outlets to the foul line extended players and a mirror image of what happened on the way down happens back up the court.
9. Players rotate through so as to not be in the same place two times in a row.
10. Most important step. THE BALL DOES NOT HIT THE FLOOR
11. Do this for an alloted amount of time whether it be 5 minutes/10 minutes that is up to you. Set them a target for baskets made and if it is not reached then penalize them with sprints. Make EVERYONE call out each time a basket is made so they don't lose count and cannot cheat.

Diagram legend:
Light Blue dots = shot or layup.
Black dots = players
Black lines = pass
Grey lines = sprint

Ummmmm I know this isn't too easy to follow but by all means if you need anymore instructions then please just ask.

Wow! That is a huge span of ages. That would be a lot harder to coach all those different age groups.

last season was easy.I had 8-9 players all the time so they came together.
Now I get 4 players aged 21-25 and I have a cor group in the middle between the older part and my "Young Guns";)

We need to go back to Run & Gun with our current team. I highly doubt that we make any significant trades besides bringing in a new coach and possibly a pg. but I miss the run and gun days with Dantoni. We can possibly be top 5 in scoring instead of 11-13 how we were this season. Thoughts?
