OT: Huge pileup shuts down I-4

Post#1 » by Optimus_Steel » Wed Jan 9, 2008 4:01 pm

If anyone hasent seen this news, a huge pileup on 1-4 this morning in Polk county has shut down the interstate. At least 3 people dead and atleast 50 cars, at least 80 injured. They are blaming the crash on very poor visibility due to fog and a controlled brush fire that got out of control. I saw the pics in the morning and there was absolutely no visibility at all, nothing. Who was the genius that ordered the controlled brush fire??? They got alot of explaining to do and maybe some penalties to face.

However, the National Weather Service in Melbourne this morning issued a special weather report warning commuters that visibility in the Polk County area would be down to zero because of smoke from brush fires and fog.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said one his deputies was among the first on the scene and described the scene as "a wall" of smoke and fog. The deputy's car was struck as he responded but, injured, he worked to try to clear the scene.

"He said, 'I could still hear metal grinding as cars went into each other. I did all that I could but I watched a man burn to death today,'" Judd said of the deputy, who was not identified.

I commute that way every day.

I was going to leave about a half hour later than usual today as I am still recovering from the GREAT LSU victory. Thank goodness I didn't leave earlier.

I saw the brush fire on tuesday afternoon when I was headed home and was a bit apprehensive with it's close proximity to I-4.

That stretch is subject to severe fog frequently. I can only imagine the horror of running into zero visibility at 70 mph.

Hope all turns out as well as it can..............

Sentinel reporting 70 car pile-up.....I have driven through zero visibility smoke/fog before, and it is kind of scary not being able to see whats ahead of you. Don't like driving in it at all.

wow small world. In Minneapolis a semi with 7000 gallons of fuel rolled over and leaked out this morning, shutting down two major interstates in downtown Minneapolis.

The partying was on monday night, but it takes me 2 days to recover now.

Imagine, drink less but recovery takes longer......hmmmmm

Im sure some people stopped when they hit the fog. But that is just as bad because people behind you wont see you and they will crash into you. Overall a really bad situation to be in.

Looks like the FHP and other government officials are trying to deny any blame. One of them even said that the controlled fired that got out of control had no effect LOL. Yea whatever, got to be be an idiot to believe that. Someone please grow some balls and take official responsibility.

Lawsuits. ^^^^^

I saw the controlled out of control fire on tuesday afternoon.

Brush fires along that stretch in Polk county are fairly common.

Where they were doing the controlled burn, was adjacent to many acres of dead pines next to I-4.
