It is extremely hard to quantify on an unbiased level who really is the best defender. Agree, popularity contest. If Rudy displays any sort of disgruntledness if he is overlooked, ill lose respect for him.

I think Rudy would absolutely be in the right to be disgruntled, that award is a HUGE component of legacy building. Only two players in NBA history (Dikembe Mutombo and Ben Wallace) have won the award four times; winning it would put Rudy Gobert into that category of generational defensive players.

It doesn't matter because he is clearly winning it this season, but it's valid to be annoyed about a snub.

Has anyone ever won it 5 times?

Nope. That is the history that Rudy is chasing (though whether he deserves it or not, I could see this being the last one).

I agree with you both! I think Loaf is being completely rational, but Gobert takes tremendous pride on his defense, which is usually a part of basketball that doesn’t get enough credit. I hope he gets the award. His play, and the way he manages the team’s defense, and MIN being #1 by a lot, trumps Wemby’s block numbers. Wemby will get his soon.

My question would be: Would a disgruntled Gobert be better, or worse?

Yeah Rudy has shown at times he can dominate so much so that he is the best player on the court. I wouldn't mind a pissed off Rudy doing that either.

That award must not have been done while Bill Russell was playing or he'd probably have 10.

Well deserved. Good to see the voters didn't muck this one.

Not a small feat. This basically guarantees he goes into the hall of Fame as one of the greatest defensive players the game has ever known.

Congrats Rudy!

Congrats to Rudy, a baby and then an award!
Definitely deserving of the award. So happy for him, hope he wins it again next and be the first five time defensive player of the year!

99 voters. Rudy left off top 3 by 2 of them. 72 first place votes for Rudy and 18 for Wemby. 96 first and 2nd place votes for Rudy. Way to go Rudy. 4 DPotYs.

What is interesting to me is there is 124 people voted. There is 27 people who thinks Gobert doesn't even get a 3rd place vote??? I can see why people don't vote for Wemby and the other players. How can you didn't even give a 3rd place vote to Gobert?

Maybe I was wrong in the previous post. Is it 99 voters or 128 voters?

Congrats to Rudy on DPOY number 4!

The 18 people who voted for Wemby over Rudy (and Bam and AD) should have their votes taken away because they are voting for the wrong things.
22-60 and a Bottom 10 defense. Wemby is not a top tier defender. Yet. But he puts up a lot of Blocks.
He got cooked regularly in the first half of the year.
Both Davis and Bam should have finished ahead of him.

He has a long way to go to get to Rudy's level, but he has physical tools unmatched in this era of basketball.
