Mitchell will probably demand a trade to the Nets.

They need to move him and trade Allen.

Step one - Try to extend Mitchell.

Pretty much everything is on hold till they get that answer.

Mitchell is almost certainly going to say no unless they can trade Garland and Mobley for star wings.

I'm going to assume Mitchell is gone so you simply try and get as much value as possible. They should be trying to continue taking steps so maybe a 3rd team that is looking to rebuild for their star. Depending on who they get, I would keep Allen for one more season alongside Mobley. So essentially the star might need to primarily be a 2/3.
Doesn't seem like many teams are looking to tear it all down though.

There's an option between Mitchell declines to extend and Mitchell takes a five year max which involves him extending long enough to be 35% eligible.

I'd run it back.

Jarret Allen isn’t winning you anything. Garland won’t show up in the playoffs. Mobley is a glorified dunk man. Mitchell has some experience but is a liability on defense. To me, the Cavs are a treadmill team.

If Mitchell doesn't extend then trade him to the Nets. Look to move Allen as well for a big that can stretch the floor.

Think Nets have the best package for Mitchell whether its Cam Johnson/DFS/3-4 firsts or whether its Mikal/1-2 firsts.

Build around Garland and Mobley and recoup some draft picks. Allen can fetch a decent prospect + pick(s)

To which I would tell Mitchell to kick rocks... I'd certainly entertain trade proposals for DM, though!

I'd say "trade his ass to Minnesota", but that's no longer much of a punishment, is it? To Washington, maybe? Him, Poole and Cuz can fight for the ball...

If Mitchell does resign - Garland for mikal could make sense.

If Mitchell re-signs, a lot of it is going to be to grow with this group. I don't expect much to change, although you might see Niang go out in a deal similar to the Osman-for-Strus trade. Maybe attach #20 for DFS?

To Griz: Allen + DFS

To Nets: Mitchell + Griz Filler

To Cavs: Johnson + Bane

Value to taste with picks. Cavs should get something from Nets.

I would not trade Bane for that return. I think we give something around Smart/#9 for Allen though.

And Cavs say no. Do you really think Bane has more value than Allen|DFS?

Yes I do, especially for Memphis. And we really don't need DFS.

Extend Mitchell
Extend Mitchell
Extend Mitchell

Nothing else likely matters. I guess if he won't you hope Garland can still bring you back a good wing and can make a deep run and he re-considers you the next summer. But any aspirations begin and end with Mitchell.

My vision would look like this for Cavs

BKN in Mitchell/Lavert
Cavs in Bridges/Cam

NOLA in Allen
Cavs in Murphy/Nance

Cavs

Mobley/Nance
Cam/Wade/Niang
Murphy/Struss
Bridges/Okoro
Garland/FA PG

Nola

Allen/FA C
Zion/Daniels
Herb/Marshall
McCollum/Hawkins
PG (Ingram trade)/Alvarado

Andrew Nembhard must be the first PG on the team and leave Hali/Indy

Seeing the rumours Mitchell might sign and Garland might look for a trade I was thinking something along these lines:

1. A Garland/Ingram swap makes a lot of sense for both teams, assuming Ingram would sign an extension.

2. Allen swap for a stretch 4 or big wing which is more difficult to find 1 equal value player in that role. OKC are the possibly the most likely to have interest in Allen and have the draft capital to get him with filler. Cavs could flip some of those assets to go for a player from a rebuild team that might fit. A Deni Avdija/Miles Bridges/Pat Williams type maybe with some assets leftover to upgrade elsewhere.

Cavs go forward with a core of Mitchell, Ingram and Mobley signed up for years and good roles players to compliment.
