Re: Draft Chat 2014
Long night. My Ebron thoughts:
http://www.detroitlionsdraft.com/?p=3071
Tomorrow will be two defensive picks, I'm very certain of this. Have a pretty good idea who will be taken at 45 and it's not a name many would expect or even know well. I can't tip it because I don't want to violate the trust of the person who told me, but I'll reveal it afterwards whether I was right or wrong.
What I would do tomorrow:
Kyle Van Noy at 45.
Justin Ellis or Terrence Brooks at 76.

We will be very lucky if he is anything close to Graham, but to expect it is a bit much.
They might plan to use him in a similar role, but that doesn't mean he will be as good as him. Pistons can plan to use KCP in the same role as Kobe but that won't make him Kobe.
You can't evaluate NFL talent like you do NBA. The NFL is more structured and you can identify certain physical attirbutes/abilities that are prime for each position, ebron has a majority of those attributes, he's also physically imposing. i think most would be suprised, if he doesn't turn into a premier TE in the NFL.
If he proves to be as good as Graham or Vernon Davis, and then trade Pettigrew later and have his replacement all set, it could prove to be a good pick in the end. Right now though its very confusing.
This isn't the NBA, when trading player, there's compensation. We'll have pettigrew for at least 3 of the 4 years. Also having 2 TE's isn't a problem, its the fact that we have 2 capable TE's already. We have other holes
Lions do already have that #2 WR filled though with Tate, and I personally don't think the OL is a problem. Its not the best in the league, but its good enough.
Most would be suprised if Raiola repeats his performance of last year, he's older, and needs to be replaced, Sims is gone after this year. Lewan can play all over the line, he'd be our LT, and Reiff over to G(where most think he's better). Rather shore up our protection of our QB than give him another weapon when he doesn't even know how to use the other 3 he's had.
CB and an upgrade at OLB were really the only glaring needs to me and they have yet to address either of them. Now the best they can do is some 2nd-3rd rate rookies, and CB is the one position where rookies generally don't make an immediate impact, let alone 2nd-7th round picks.
Maybe if/when Suh gets his deal done they will be able to go shopping again in FA after the June 1st waivers, and address the secondary with some vets then.
This draft is pretty deep and whom ever we get in the 2nd and 3rd round is going to make a impact immediately. A OLB/DE would definitely give this team a boost. Center, DE, and backup QB are also needs.
Lastly Rookie CB do make quite a bit of impact.
Even with Suh, we'd still have to sign our picks, and anyone left over after waivers is pretty much fill ins. Teams win through the draft.

Per Jeff
Don’t look at Ebron as a tight end. Look at him as the third receiver, albeit a very big one. He’s the receiver with size that can threaten the middle of the field and line up either in the seam or wide out.
Being that i liked Evans at #10, i guess i'd be contradictory to not like Ebron. i agree that the pettigrew signing looks real bad now.
Question: When could we realistically look at trading Pettigrew?
Also: VAN NOY please!

Re: Draft Chat 2014
I like this pick. Ebron can be the 3rd option (or even 2a/2b with Tate), and gives us a lot of flexibility. I didn't like the Pettigrew sognin and at the time, and this makes it seem even worse. I know they wanted a TE around who was a capable blocker, but I think you can get someone like that for a lot cheaper thanwhat they gave Pettigrew. I think Ebron is going to be a beast though, so I'm not upset by the pick.
They do have some other holes they need to fill, so it will be interesting to see how these next few rounds play out. I think we can roll with the CB's we have, but it wouldn't hurt to take one if he's at the top of your board. We need a safety who'll be ready to start in a year or two. We need a LB. We could use a DT, maybe even another DE. Needs all over the defense, so hopefully the next 2 or 3 picks are defense.

So, it's not gonna be Van Noy at 45?
Just throwing this out so I'll look good if it comes to pass tomorrow — how about Ra'Shede Hageman if he's there? I know he had a first round grade from a lot of people, there was speculation that the Lions would go DT thanks to the Fairley situation, and Hageman has the added versatility to play DE alongside Fairley as well. I know most of our defensive focus has been about OLBs, but Hageman could definitely be a good fit.
Other names to throw out — Jeremiah Attachou or Demarcus Lawrence, perhaps? And I'm not asking you to break any confidences, Jeff; just trying to guess at the "unexpected name" before it's called tomorrow.

Wouldnt be disappointed with Kony Ealy or Tuitt if they are around at 45. Van Noy would also be nice but I doubt he drops that far.

Still can't get over drafting a big TE/WR that drops 12% of his passes, especially considering he can't block to save his life.
I literally can't find a way to make myself excited about this pick. Maybe we go defense from here on out and I can step away from the ledge, but I doubt it.

I like CB McGill. Not sure if we take him in the 2nd....maybe he lasts until the 3rd?
Not a huge fan of Van Noy. Isn't he already like 26 years old?
WR Martavious Bryant in the 4th?

If Tuitts there, you grab him, i don't think he will be, i wouldn't be upset if we took a 4th rounder and 3rd rounder to get back into the 2nd

Our pass catchers were still lacking. CJ, Tate and then not much. We needed a guy for Stafford to throw to because it is a passing league. We still have picks past the first round...we will fill some holes, don't worry. Next year when our offense is off the chain we can bring this thread up and have a good chuckle.
We addressed most of our offensive issues in FA. Signing tate to boat load of money, Pettigrew to decent money. Bush also can play in the slot, we also have Fauria who should develop. At some point, staffords got to be a QB that makes his receivers better, not the other way around.
Defense wins championships, that's borderline fact, our defense has so many holes and we need talent. i don't know how you could argue that this pick is what Detroit needed
That's definitely not borderline fact. Seattle was a beast but the SB winner trend has been very good offenses and mediocre defenses. Our offense still has some major holes and pass catchers was still a huge need; not sure what to say if you think otherwise. I think we will look D in some of these upcoming rounds though, so that will get addressed. Given the board when we picked I didn't like any of the defensive players.
We will have to agree to disagree.

Love Van Noy. Fills a huge hole on D and is a smart, versatile player. I'm very, very happy

Re: Draft Chat 2014
Very happy with the move for Van Noy.
The player I hinted at yesterday was Liberty CB Walt Aikens. With the way things are going he could wind up being there in the 3rd.

We either go Secondary or Center in the 3rd, or DT if values there. Nix i think has injury concerns

The Lions were not interested in taking him, they were not that high on SJB. Not real high on Desir from what I gather either.
