2013 Offseason News

Post#1 » by ohara » Sat Jan 5, 2013 7:39 pm

Panthers keeping Rivera for a 3rd season. He earned it. Team finished on a 4 game win streak and looks better. Difficult times ahead tho regarding the Salary Cap and necessary cuts. Seems everyone things we will have no option but to let DeAngelo walk. Cannot save money cutting Stewart. And we are way over the salary cap thanks to bad management by Hurney and all the extensions he gave out. Can save money by letting Gross go also, but cannot see the wisdom in sacrificing the LT who protects Cam. Hard cuts will be made, and no money for signing FA's. All the additions will have to come from the Draft.

Coaching shakeup in Carolina. Rivera stays, but Panther let go the RB, LB and WR coaches. Will be interesting to see whom they bring in to replace the departed.

Chudzinski interviewing with Browns for HC job. Would suck to lose him. Really want Cam to have another year with Chud.

Panthers hired their new GM today. Dave Gettleman is the man. He has been the NY Giants Sr. Pro Personnel Analyst. I dont know anymore about him.

I hope that we offload Beason. Kuechly is better in the middle then he ever was and Thomas Davis has seemingly recovered from his 3rd ACL tear (he was great), even if Davis goes down we still have Senn. I love what our DE's did this year as well. I think that Captain walks this year, perhaps with Martin as well. We would be doing ourselves a favor to offload Charles Godfrey who has been horrid of late.

Entering the draft we have even more needs than last year. We need a DT, CB, S, WR, G, and RT.... I would love to see us grab a WR in this draft. Smith isn't a redzone target, and Lafell isn't an elite WR, that stated it should be a 2nd or 3rd round concern.

Penquin, I think there is a good chance that both Beason and DeAngelo walk. The team is so screwed with the salary cap after all the extensions Hurney doled out, we have to let some people go just to get under the Cap. And that still wont allow us to go after an FA's. Gonna have to do it all by the draft.

Chudzinski hired by Browns as HC. Have to see who our new GM tabs as the new OC now. Not sure how it will affect Cam having to learn a new system. They may promote Cam's QB coach Mike Shula, or go after Norv Turner for OC. But Dallas and Chudzinski may both be after Norv as well.

Mike Shula promoted from QB coach to OC. The best move they could make IMO. He is familiar with the system in place and he knows Cam's game, so it is a good move.

Congrats to Luke Kuechly for being voted the Defensive ROY!! Way to go young man! Back to back years our Rookie gets #1. Last year Cam got Offensive ROY.

Luke Kuechly has the potential to be something special. I mean like best MLB in the NFL special (if he already isn't in consideration). I read somewhere that the Panthers went from the 26th ranked D to the 10th after he moved inside, and really Im not all that surprised given how good he is against the run. On top of that he is an elite athlete for his position. Screw it, I might as well say it: the man has better instincts than any MLB currently in the league- that includes Willis, Bowman, or anyone else of mention...

Also I am really glad that AP won MVP- he deserved it.

Gotta love it. Great young core.

+ congrats to AP and all that. The Vikings had a surprisingly good season.

With the superbowl over I think its time that we start looking towards the next season. Obviously the Panthers have needs at HB (I worry about Stewart), WR (age and skill), LT (age+money are factors), RG (skill being the factor), RT (skill), DT, CB (do we keep Capt or not?)

Charlotte Observer reports that the Panther want to keep their running back. Still $10 mil over the cap, but with other cuts and restructuring, they plan to get under it. But plans are to keep Stewart, DeAngelo Williams and Tolbert. I'm good with that.

Panthers release Ron Edwards, the oft injured FA signing from a couple years ago. Still a bit over the cap and need to make more moves. Gamble likely to go which would get us under the cap. Panthers want to resign Dwan Edwards who played well for them and he wants to resign with Carolina. If we can get one more existing contract redone, it might work out.

Guys I like for us to draft in the first round:

Sheldon Richardson: the guy is a beast and all reports hint at him being a great guy as well. May very well end up being the best of this years stellar DT crop. I want this guy the most.

Marcus Trufant: is a shutdown corner with the athletics, physicality, and mentality to suceed in the NFL. I like him more than I did Claiborne last year.

Jonathan Cooper: great versatile guard.

Chance Warmack: is one hell of a ron blocking RG, but isnt super versatile and probably looked good due to bamas talent.

Star: not as huge on this guy as I am Sheldon, but he certainly draws double teams and has the strength to crash the interior of any line.

Other guys:

Terron Armstead(LT): an athletic freak with unlimited upside.
Justin Hunter(WR): another athletic freak, who hasnt even fully recovered from the devestating injury he suffered. at 6'4 his 4.4 40 was impressive, especially given that he is still recovering.

Gamble to retire since Panthers let him go. Will not sign elsewhere. I wish the young man the very best. Getting out with some money and his health. Good for him.

holy crap... that makes me sad, that he wanted to be a Panther for life that badly... wow. Dammit if we lose Captain im going to cry. Too many of our loyal guys dissapearing now-a-days.

also: did anyone notice that percy trade? A first for the guy, I mean he has the potential to be worth it... but...
