Seems like the Red Sox and the Yankees will be in town this weekend to scout Bedard. I dont see anyone in the Sox pipeline that would help the Ms right away although they have a catcher and a 3rd baseman that are pretty well thought of. Hard to say what value Bedard has on his own, we might have to send a middle reliever with him to get something done. My guess is they'd love a Brendan Ryan but dont want to part with him.

Red Sox seem happy enough with Scutaro and Lowrie, so they probably haven't thought about Ryan. I'd think the Yanks would like to see if they could upgrade Jeter, but obviously they can't do it without a massive PR disaster. I mean, they're paying him 20 mil a year to have a OPS that is less than 30 points better than Ryan's. Wow. With Ryan's current hot streak, he might even pass him which would be......incredible.

If we do need to send someone else along with Bedard to get value, then I guess it really depends on who we send. I'd have no problems with parting with Chris Ray or Jamey Wright or whoever if it means a better return. Who knows. Maybe Jack Z can convince the Sox to part with Reddick or someone :D.

Tonight is probably the biggest game the M's have left for the remainder of the season. I've been reading that Bedard probably doesn't even need to be particularly sharp (the scouts will expect rust), but if he can get 6 innings on that knee and feel fine afterwards we'll have ourselves a bidding war between New York and Boston. Not expecting a Justin Smoak/Blake Beavan package, obviously, but we should be able to acquire something of value. Bedard, if healthy, is the best starter available by far, and the big AL East powers are both desperate for pitching.

Mid afternoon Mike Carp thought: in his first time up this year, Carp never played more than three consecutive days; and he only played three consecutive days once. He often went days without a start in left or DH. He went 7 for 36 (.194); 36 ABs, and he was up almost for the entire month of June. Since being called up again in July, he's 13 for 33 (.394). 33 ABs in 9 days. Regular playing time = a young bat produces. What a novel concept (not expecting him to continue to hit just under .400, mind you; just saying, that Peguero/Carp/Halman trifecta in left just didn't work for anybody).

I dont think Bedard has a lot of trade value but you could probably include a reliever and get a decent package in return. Would love a catcher from the Yankee organization or Red Sox for that matter.

The Pence situation seems like one we should be in on. They could do this by being a 3rd team in the deal and maybe getting Brown back from Philly or just go after Pence directly, we have enough young talent to make that work.

Carp has been my second favorite position player behind Ackley. I think his second callup has been better for the reason you mention, PT, but also it looks like he's a little more agressive earlier in the count and he's also going to left with that pitch on the outside part of the plate. Not sure if that's coaching or maybe he's picked it up from watching Ackley approach an at bat.

Some news......

Cust DFA'd. Langerhans to Arizona. Hopefully not more Peguero. FREE WILLY MO.

Jack Z apparantly offered Vargas to the Red Sox. Guess it becomes a question of how much risk the Red Sox are willing to accept. The oft injured ace, or the solid innings eater.

Detroit called about Fister, but backed out because Z asked for too much,

Anyway, heres to a good start from Bedard tonight! Anyone got an idea of what his pitch count is tonight?

Came to post just that. Beavan isn't sent down, meaning someone's heading out the door soon enough.

Not like we had a chance anyways, but Pence is now gone too.

Well, Bedard goes 1.1 innings, gives up 3, has a couple on, and threw what seemed like 60 pitches.

So... not great. Doesn't necessarily appear hurt, just horrifically ineffective. No control.

Bedard goes 1.1 innings and walks 4. Guess we just lost our best trade chip.

At least Bedard probably was more rusty than injured. Hit 93 with the fastball a few times from what I saw, a couple of 90s. It was more bad control, hopefully he can shake it off.
